Mobil 1 - 5w - 50
#1
I know this has probabaly been done loads of times before but unless you have a specific interest I don't take much notice.
Anyway, I got this stuff in france last time I was over. Is it o.k to put in the Scoob ? first 1000 service coming up on the P1.
I know the 0w 40 is not supposed to be used.
thanks
Steve.

You should not put a fully synthetic in the car until the 7500 service at the earliest, a good quality semi-synthetic should be used at the 1000 mile service. the reason is that the full synthetic prvents the engine bedding in properly leading to problems later in life (high oil consumption etc)

It is impossible to make declarative statements on which oil to use. (Never mind which grade).
Oil choice should relate directly to the use, conditions, and climate (amongst a host of other things).
There is no such thing as best, "most suitable for the given conditions" is probably more accurate.
Stick with Bob's advice, don't go Fully synthetic until the car has had a chance to bed itself in properly and I agree with the 7.5K earliest part in particular.

5/50 was the grade for Mobil 1 before the 0/40 replaced it here, and was the "ideal" grade rating for performance cars. I spoke to Mobil on the phone some time ago (queries line) and suggested that they had "shot themselves in the foot" when 5/50 was withdrawn here, the definitive enthusiasts brand of oil was now being deserted. The 15/50 is noticably thicker when cold and I will not use it during the winter. I am currently using Valvoline "Synpower" 5/50 (full synthetic) all year round, plus its quids cheaper!

I put fully synth in at 1k, 5w30 shell helix then upped the grades to 5w40 at 7.5k and now on 15w50 at 15k service (even thou it was 11k.
I think you should put a thinner fully synth oil in as 1000 miles is enough to sort out the rough edges in your engine, but up your grades as you go along thou from thin to thicker to give the best protection to your engine.

Thanks again for all the advice.
Think i'll let the dealer put in their semi synthetic at the first 1k service and then see how loosened up she is by the 6k service and then maybe put it in then.
By the way - 4 litres were £18 in the Carrefour in Cite europe.
Thanks
Steve.

Maybe later on you should think about trying Castrol RS 10/60 I think, thanks to Stef yesterday we managed to find some and the car feels great with it. Oil Temp Gauges takes quite a while to get warmed up, don't know if its down to the Oil or not.

Hi Steve,
Your engine should bed in quite quickly, thus the reason i went to fully synth after the 1k service, it wont run in for quite a few thousand miles though, the 1k is THE most important service for your car as it should remove all the filings from your engine that have broken off and all the parts should now run smoothly together, once the oil has soaked into the metal (bedded in) it wont be porous anymore, then you can use fully synth, it also doesnt take long for this to happen, just the running in period is a pain
Remember the test that mobil did on a bmw? oil change at 1k then run on mobil1 fully synth for how many thousand miles, 200k or something like that? no problems what so ever!! the engine was like new, no leaks etc
Its up to you what you want to do oil wise but if its been proven by mobil from 1k to 200k then i dont think there will be a problem with your car
