Question

My first ever new car arrives (hopefully) in a couple of weeks, (MY01 WR blue Mica WRX) and I'm already getting paranoid about the first oil change-

Should I let the dealer put their own stuff in from the tank, or should I buy my own fully synthetic and watch them pour it in?

Thanks in advance,

Scooby-Dude

Its up to you mate what you want in your engine but you dont have to use fully synthetic as my car has always used semi-magnatex oil from the Scooby dealer, although its probably cheaper doing what your thinking about doing.

DON'T put fully synth in from new nor use particularly low w (viscosity) ratings (i.e.0w). It will blow most of it out the exhaust plus take forever for the engine to bed in.

There is a 1000 mile oil change and this is allegedly because a special running in oil is put in from new.

Subaru UK recommend Shell Helix SEMI synth.

And this will start off much conflicting advice as the oil threads always do......

My dealer uses Mobil 1, but it needs to be the right viscosity! I think it's the Motorsport stuff, but it costs about £10 per litre!!!

Cheam will use the specially formulated 5w-40 Mobil1 or something of similar quality if you prefer.

Scooby-dude, don't be afraid to ask your dealer exactly what they are putting in. Some will give you a choice. If you're not sure speak to an independent specialist such as Pete at

Should really wait till at least the first 7500 service to change to fully synth from semi-synth. Engine won't have bedded in properly after 1000 miles.

According to Subaru - Mobil1 Motorsport (15W/50) is only recommended for use on cars outside of the warranty period. If your car is within warranty, then the special formula 5W-40 Mobil1 (or equivalent Shell etc) is recommended. The 5W-40 is only available from the dealerships, but there are equally good quality (and same viscosity) oils available (Silkolene etc).

5w:40 was standard Mobil 1 up to 1997, 0w:40 replaced but they re-introduced to support Subaru.

In the Netherlands Mobil 1 5W50 is available. This oil is a thin "50" oil. This oil has a viscosity of 17.3 mm2/s at 100 degrees Celsius (a "40" is between 12.5 mm2/s and 16.3 mm2/s, a "50" is between 16.3 mm2/s and 21.9 mm2/s, a "60" is between 21.9 mm2/s and 26.1 mm2/s, so a "60" is quite thick compared to a "40").

It took me some time to get hold of this Mobil 1 5W50 oil, because most of the sales people think the 0W40 is the only type for the Mobil 1. But after telephoning with the Mobil headquarters in the Netherlands they told me that the Mobil 1 is readily available almost everywhere. So give it a try in England!

Hi there,
Is it true that Castrol RS 10w/60 is not, or will not be available any longer? Cause it is the oil Subaru dealers are currently using here.
