Can you be a bit more specific about the quality problems. Also which grade did the dealer have concerns with or was it all grades ?.
Thanks.

Not really difficult, Mobil are the only oil manufacturer I know of that have the "Product Data Sheets" for their oils freely available on their web site. Would they do that if they had something to hide?

Hope this link works as it is a bit long. You could copy and paste the address if not.

Nothing like an unsubstanciated claim from a dealer to start a panic, eh?

The 5W/40 oil is still approved by FHI and is still what I'll use.

Has anyone got any further information other than the bad mouthing of one named dealer???

AF Noble's recommendation not to use Mobil 1 comes from an official notice that Subaru UK sent to all its dealers last year saying that Mobil 1 0W40 grade should not be used in turbocharged engines. Mobil 1 Motorsport is fine as, apparently, is the Shell fully synthetic that AF Noble puts in their customers cars.

Cool

Hi,

Just love this subject ,never seems to fade away .

Well here goes, Mobil 1 that is 15w/50
is good enough for the likes of Porsche
and BMW.....

Have been using the stuff in conditions
that U.K. motorists can only read about or
see on TV , and I mean dust and heat with a capital H at 50+ degrees Celcius .

NO problems what so ever

Red face

Have to agree with many of the comments here - can't believe this crap is still flying around. I'm sure a lot of this comes from the different grades available - the 0W 40 is considered too thin (that is standard Mobil1 bought from your local motorshop etc). Subaru recommend 5W 40 Mobil1 (for cars still in their warranty period) which is specially formulated and available only at your dealer (or from the continent). Once you are outside your warranty period you can use Mobil1 Motorsport (15W 40 I think).

The fact remains that Mobil1 / Shell FS / Castrol RS etc etc are all top quality oils. As long as you put the right viscosity into your car, I doubt you would have any problems (and yes I have checked all of this with my local main dealer). Ultimately, it is more important that the oil is changed regularly (and after EVERY track day), rather than the brand.

Just for the record, I have been using Mobil1 (5W 40) since new - car has now done 23K faultless miles - wouldn't use anything else.

Hi all,

thought I'd add my penny worth ...

I used Mobil 1 in a CVH engine from new for 9 years, I dropped the oil every 6k and I'd done 98k in it when I sold it, I redlined this engine everyday 6 days a week and in 9 years except from servicing costs I spent nothing on the engine and it gave me no problems, in fact it ran a sweet as a nut right up to the day I chopped it for the scoob ..... it was just the rest of the car fell/rotted to bits around the engine what can you say ..... it was a Ford

I've not used it in the scoob as my dealer does all the servicing now but if it's used from new I can't see what the problem is .... you just have to use the recomended grade.

I would not take this dealers word for it as they do not seem to know very much. they told me they could tell if the car had piston slap when it was warm but it only did it when cold. When I quizzed IM group they can not tell when the engine is hot. They also tried several times to sort a misfire in my car only for me to find it myself(loose battery connections). My car has now had a new piston and timing belt tensioner courtesy of a much better dealer(Town and Country in Perth).

Talking

Sorry Dave - it was getting on my goat Won't happen again. Taz - you hit the nail on the head - find yourself a good experienced dealership who know what they're talking about. I'm lucky that my local dealer is Cheam Motors who do know what they are talking about as many people on this BBS will testify to.

Cool

The mobil1 goes in at the next service (15k) started off with shell 5w30 fully synth then went to 5w40 fully synth next is 15w50 fully synth.
If people read the packet carefully then you may find there is a telephone helpline, if you ring it they tell you exactly what you can and cannot put in your car customer service for you
(dont slate mobil1, its the bees knees )

I just love the "golden oldies" - Mobil 1
is a classic - it is old enough to be on Sky 1.

Please keep it coming.
