MY95 Starting Problem Help
#1
My MY95 UK turbo has tonight prevented me from heading to the rally in Bournmouth. I've had a hint of this problem for the last 6 months:
Occassionally when warm the engine refuses to start, as if it was "flooded", until today car allways eventually started and has run well. Today I flattened the battery trying to get it started, after recharging it and having checked relays and plugs under the bonnet it started first turn! Drove home to collect overnight bag, on trying to restart it no luck. Anyone got any ideas, I'm waiting for daylight tomorrow, plan to check the following: 1. Fuel lift pump (top of fuel tank). 2. Air flow sensor 3. Alarm imobiliser. Can anyone help with further suggestions?

I have a 95WRX and I had this type of problem with mine. Started fine from cold, but when warm would not start and gradually got worse, we changed the battery, alarm even tried reseting the ecu which worked at first but then this stopped having any effect. Occasionally the car would cut out at Junctions. We changed crank position sensor as advised could be this but still same, eventually took car to Graham Goodes who found that it was the cam position sensor causing the problem. Since then we have never had another problem and this was about 4 months ago. I hope this helps

Thanks very much, so far I've checked most connectors / relays all very clean. I'm presently cleaning the airflow meter - I've got a Pipercross kit fitted and have been worried about it's oil contaminating the airflow meter.
Mandi it sounds like I've got the same problem as you had and no doub't your expirence will save me endless hassel. Might well end up taking it to Graham Goodes very soon! Once again many thanks, webs great.

Ah, I'm suffering very a similar problem. So far I have only changed the thermostat. I plan to change the temperature sensor. I spoke to Grahame Goode's today and they advised changing the temperature sensor and cleaning the airflow meter buy removing the air box and spraying some carb cleaner. Do not touch the filament as it easily breaks, I have been warned. I'm gonna try this at the weekend if it ever stops raining. I'll let you know if you like.

I spoke to Grahame Goode's again and they've quoted £110 for the crank sensor!! and only £30 for the temperature sensor. I know which I'm gonna try first! But I will probably do both in the end, just to be sure.

Just had a week with no problems whatsoever, having cleaned airflow sensor and cleaned/spayed in WD40 the cam possition sensor. Then tonight had the problem re-occure. A quick wiggle of the cam sensor and it started straight away - looks like I need to buy new sensor. I'll keep you posted. Rick

Thats what our problem was i think it cost about £125.00 from graham goodes, i thought that your problem sounded very similar to our problem. I`m glad your problem has been resolved quicker than ours.
Hope it is fixed when you change cam position sensor.

My car back to good health. It was the cam possition sensor (located below oil filler cap). An agents computer confirmed it was the cam sensor ( apparently there is a 50:50 chance that it'll show the fault). However the agents cost of approx: £89 didn't go down too well and as they didn't have one in stock I found a second hand item for £40 and all seems well at pressent.
