Question

I am new to this turbo stuff. I picked up my MY96 WRX last night and I am very happy.

However, a couple of times when accelerating fast it suddenly decelerated rapidly, almost like when hitting the limiter, and then picked up again. One of my friends suggested this may be over boost?

If this is the case, what can I do to cure the problem?

This is an old chestnut, and there's many solutions.

Cleaning the pipes around the boost control solenoid with brake cleaning fluid seems to be the best way to do it, so I've heard.

There's chaps on this board who will have done this, perhaps they can give the exact procedure? Failing that, searching the archives for "overboost" is bound to return many many bits of advice.

One of the causes might be overfilling of oil - search the archives, and see some informative postings from john felstead on the subject. Never overfill the oil, but never underfill it either!

I'm having the same problem with my 1995 turbo as well and would appreciate any advice on how to cure the problem.

The trouble I've had with searching through previous post is that I cannot always tell wether comments refer to earlier boxer engines (such as in mine) or the newer engine.

I find the number of tubes under the bonnet of my Impreza a bit confusing, some pipes just appear to go round in circles. Is there a diagram anyone could post which labels all of the relavant engine components.

Have the same problem in my MY98 Turbo (standard spec).

Really violent cut out in 3rd, 4th and 5th gear.

Getting it serviced in a couple of weeks so I'll get the dealer to check it out.
