Can anyone help a scooby newbie ?
What is the valve / solinoid ? mounted at the left hand side behind the airbox of my UK MY98. It is on the gold looking plate and is like a cylinder shape, it has two wires going into the top of it and two pipes coming out the bottom.
it produces a regular clicking noise between about 800 - 2000 rpm which sounds like a knocking from the inside of the car.
Is this normal ? should it be doing this ? at first a thought it was the engine, but have now determined it is this. it's only just become noticable
Thanks

Boost Control Solenoid; bleeds air away from the wastegate actuator, allowing ecu to control boost.
On a MY99 you only hear it at high frequency on full chat. Maybe dirty - is the car overboosting or hesitant on a light throttle between 2500 & 3000rpm?

This is the wastegate solenoid. Its purpose is to meter the boost pressure that activates the watsegate valve, firing it in pulses. It fires in fast pulses as the wastegate is then less likely to stick or jump between positions.
Its operation should be silent and I would get your dealer to check it.
