Cool

Could it be an exhaust heatshield rattling?

Question

Hi

My UK 99my has developed a slight metallic rattle or vibration from the engine bay somewhere. It seems to appear on hard acceleration & also hard deceleration. I can't figure out where it's coming from. Any idea's please?

Cool

If you've got an AC it's likely to be the pipe behind the intercooler, rubbing against the "wall" (couldn't find the word...there's a screw on the mount for the pipe-thingy, that's where mine rubbed, and made a strange noise on accel/deceleration).

Just pull it away a little, and tighten the mountening clamp.

Yes, I have a/c. I'll check the pipe. Thanks for the tip.

Nick,
I had a similar problem with my MY00 which turned out to be some of the brake pipes vibrating against the bulkhead. They just needed a slight adjustment and have been fine since. Might be worth checking yours too.

Chris & Moray

Thansk for the tips. I thought about heat shield as a first option. Is there a particular place that they usually rattle?

It is usually the one on the off side that covers the point, where the header pipes from each cylinder bank join. It is a very hot spot.

This cover on my car kept cracking. Eventually I just discarded it. I have protected the wiring loom that passes near it in the front spoiler area. Also I avoid parking the car over anything that might catch fire. It's removal has not caused any problems in nearly a year.
