Hi All
I currently own a UK MY98 Turbo with a few mods (Full decat, filter, boost raised, etc) I have seen 260BHP and 236Lbf on the rollers. I am looking into increasing the output but have a limited budget. My preferred route would be a front mount intercooler, Gems ECU, fuel pump, etc etc which I would be looking at +£3000
.
A mate of mine currently owns a MY98 Sti4 who has also moded his car. Some of the 2nd hand parts he is willing to sell on. These include
ECU
Intercooler (is there any difference between a Sti and an UK)
Turbo
I understand that the STi engine is far more robust but
Can they be safely fitted onto my car without to many problems?
What sort of power gains would I expect to see?
What sort of problems would I find?
Do I need any other parts to conduct this transition, eg. Injectors, fuel pump, regulator etc ?
Or should I stop being a tight *** and save for my preferred expensive but safe route
Cheers in advance
Neal

Turbo is VF 24 - good roller bearing turbo and a great upgrade from the TD04. Assuming the MAF sensor is OK this turbo could be fitted with the existing UK ECU so long as you run similar boost to the old one.
Ic may look the same but it is a lot more efficient - Get this from him at least!
The ECU, I feel, will not be best as 1) it runs 100 RON fuel maps 2) the rev limiter set in it works at 8000 prm - by the time you hit it on a UK car your engine will be toast! Plus the STI cams are different profiles etc.
Just my opinion - I am sure there are other who will say different but thats the beauty of this forum!

Nice one Russel thats the sort of info I am after
I am running max 16.5PSI but only when my boost controller is set high. Normally it is switched off running around 14-15PSI. Would this be acceptable boost with the VF24 turbo?
Anyone else with any helpful comments or knowledge?
Cheers

V4 STi Intercooler core is identical to UK 98 car, end tanks are slightly different but only make 1 or 2% flow difference, cooling efficiency is identical due to core, main difference when in the car comes from the STi pipework.
ECU will not work straight off as UK cars have immobiliser circuitry built into ECU, also maps are quite different due to differences in Injectors, cams, turbo etc etc.
Turbo is good upgrade though.

So if I get my mitts on the turbo what sort of extra performance would I be looking at using my standard ECU?
Torque ?
BHP ?
Lag ?
Also the STi has had a FMIC fitted so the pipework will come with the intercooler so do you deem it a good purchase to back up the turbo ?
Cheers

From: Over 500ft/lbs of torque @ just 1.1bar
I have been looking at the same sort of mods on MY99uk, but to upgrade to an VF34 turbo using my existing Tek3 map (running 17.4psi).
I have been informed that even if I dont want more performance out of the turbo than a TD04 I will still need to re-map it at an additional cost of 400GBP+vat.
I just wanted to upgarde the turbo as it is a stronger unit, but this no longer seems feasible.
Let me know if you find out otherwise.

I swapped my OE intercooler from my '98 UK car with an STi5 one and all the pipework.
The new one breathes better, and allows the ignition to be altered accordingly...........this I got from a VERY respected tuner.

Alcazar,
The STi5/6 intercooler (same core as MY99/00) is indeed a better cooler than the STi3/4 (MY97/98) as it uses a much denser core, it is actually more restrictive than the 97/98 unit but cools so much better that the end result is better chargeflow.
How much more boost can you run on the later i/c?
