<SHUDDERS>

Take the MAF Unit off, you can do it in situ; spray carb cleaner on to filament...walk away for 10 minutes, come back & replace

I have heard but cannot endorse people using cotton buds & a light wipe over.

This may cure the idle problem for a short time; thogh usually you will need to replace the MAF

Good luck

Do you think this is the route of the problem? Or could it be an idle sensor or other

I had similar problems a while back, and it was really startig to p1ss me off.
So I (upon the advice of Knowlsey and others) replaced the MAF sensor al together, and the lambda sensor (£25, halfords) and cleaned and regreased the idle solenoid.
£100 all in was a small price to pay because (touch wood) my idle is solid as a rock again
bear in mind tho that I have an MY99 which has a different MAF (alleged to be weaker than yours) and I think different lambda location.
good luck.
