WHAT DOES THE 'CHECK ENGINE' LIGHT MEAN
Does anyone know what is wrong when the 'check engine'light comes on in the instrument panel?
It started last night but the car seemed ok, and it kept going on and off so i thought it would be alright to use use today as long as i was gentle. But it isnt! i have an intermitent stutter when accelerating in all gears that seems to have no patern at all.
Got any ideas anyone?
My speedo stoped working 3 days ago do you think this has anything to do with it, as it seemed to cause no problem for the first couple of days.
Oh by the way it is an N reg STI 2.
Cheers.....JAMES

James.
Yes, the speedo cable will definitely be causing the problem. The 'check engine' light covers a multitude of sins but in this instance it will almost certainly be the following.
The ECU can detect that the speedo is not working and will then throw up a 'check engine' light.
This will sometimes be on when you start the car if the engine has only been off for a short time but will sometimes temporarily clear itself .
It will come back on when you have driven a short distance and it remembers/realises that the speedo is not working. (Until you replace the cable).
Which part of the cable is broken, the top (long) part or the short piece which fits onto the gearbox casing?
While the 'check engine' light is on, you will have an upper rev limit imposed by the ECU of 4,500 RPM at which point you will hit the rev limiter/overboost cut off (in all gears).
You perhaps have just not noticed the pattern but there will be one (unless you have other problems which developed at exactly the same time).
Hope that was of some use, if you get stuck E Mail me direct and I will give you a ring. I am just up the road in Nottm.
Mike.
