Burning smell could have been clutch or brakes if you were driving hard. I fitted new pads nd they actually smoked for a while and smelled very strongly of something burning.

Oil consumption ... its my understanding that the oil consumption of these cars should be minimal. My car uses none at all between services. I had to put 0.1 litre in it after a full track day at Castle Combe (90 laps all told) but apart from that nothing.

I sometimes notice a burning oil smell from my STi V - check oil and doesn't seem to use any.
Had same experience with MY97.

Question

I had my RB5 WRS in for its 1K service 4,500 miles (1.5 months) ago...the oil and filter were changed. I checked the oil the other night to find the tinyest bit of oil on the end of the dipstick . I had to put 2 litres of oil in it to get the level half way between F-E. I've had the car into the dealer (who was shocked) for an oil change and to check for leaks but nothing was found...I've been told to monitor the oil level over the next 1,000 miles.
Surely this amount of oil consumption can't be right...can it?

Also, while the oil level was low, after a hard drive I noticed a burning smell outside the car, whilst waiting for the turbo to wind down...possibly linked?

Any thoughts?

Cheers

James

(Burning smell has gone since recent oil change)

I bet the mechanic didn't fill enough oil or didn't chk the dipstick after a while. Let's hope all's well. Yr car is still under warranty right? why not trash it n see if anything else happens n claim something?

2+ litres of oil in 1.5 months is an awful lot. Unless you've done mega mileage in that time, that amount of consumption would be visible in your mirrors. I agree that this is likely to be due to the mechanic underfilling. You should be able to confirm this within a week. My Impreza uses no oil at all from what I can see.

I've still got the 2lt of oil from when I bought my first Scooby 3 years ago. From one service to another, I doubt if it drops more than a third between low and full (if you see what I mean). I'd keep a close eye on things if I was you.

Take care...
