Plastic Covering on front panel?

I have a Silver MY97. Recently I have been noticing that instead of damage to the paintwork caused by stone chips and scratches, I am getting holes in a clear plastic coating. Has anyone else seen this? Any suggestions? I think I would rather have polished paintwork, which needs a little work, rather than tatty plastic I cannot maintain myself.
