The steering wheel on my 95 WRX is a little worn at the "10 to" and "10 past" positions, where grubby little hands have been grasping it for 4 years. While the rest of it has a nice shiny gloss finish, these two positions have a distinctly matt look to them.

Anyway, what with all the hot sticky weather the last few days, I decided to wipe it with a slightly damp cloth to get some of the stickiness off it. These two worn bits swelled up alarmingly, like a sponge might. Now, a couple of hours later, they are back to what they were before.

That's the background, now to the question. Does anyone know how to restore the nice glossy finish to match the rest of the wheel? Anything I can buy and just rub or spray on or something? [on the wheel, that is, before anyone sends a "humourous" reply!]

bruceh, I don't know how you can shine the steering wheel again, BUT if you decide to change it I'd love to buy that ring around the horn button from you!!!

Pavlos, If I can't find a cure for this, and it gets worse, then I may buy a new wheel. I know this sounds a bit drastic, but the worn bits get really sticky in hot weather and some of the black colouring comes off on my hands. In which case you can have the centre ring with my compliments. I'll let you know if I do.

I used "Dylon shoe colour" on my ten year old Momo and although its not as good as new its a lot better and for three quid its got to be worth a try. Available from all good hardware shops.

Sorry mate, you're out of luck about the ring. I couldn't find the Dylon stuff around here that Pete recomended, but I did eventually buy some Clarks "restoring" polish, and that did the job a treat! After 3 treatments with it the whole wheel now looks like new. Brilliant stuff for £1.25 a tube!
