Question

Hi Guys, Just after a bit of advice....

I've just bought a 1998 Impreza Turbo, UK Car, it has full service history however it is now due it's 60,000 mile service.

What does this service involve?

Is it best to take it to the Subaru dealer, or will any Subaru garage suffice?....

I'm also wondering what parts are worthing replacing to make sure it's running well, ie. spark plugs, leads, air filter, etc - or will this all be done in the service?...

Is there any advantage in replacing the airfilter with a GreenFilter/K&N/ITG performance filter over the standard OEM one?

Is there also any advantage in replacing the OEM backbox with a performance one?

Is there any advantage is having a dump valve fitted or is it just a waste of money for a "whoosh"?

Also is there any tweaks to up the bhp a bit without putting any unnessary pressure on the engine? ie. ECU re-map or should I just leave it how it is?...

Sorry about all the questions, I just want to make sure my scooby is well maintained and running well.

Is there anything else I haven't covered that I should look in to? I'd appreciate everyone's advice.

Thanks,
Matt.

If I remember right, this is a fairly big service, and covers most of the items you mention.

If your car has an extended Subaru warranty that you want to maintain, then you have to take it to a franchised Subaru dealer for the service and the all-important stamp in the book. If its out of warranty, you may want to consider going to an independant specialist, who may be a little cheaper. Post a query in the dealer section of Scoobynet to find somewhere near you that can do the work, and to find out who's any good or who to avoid, and most important of all, ring round a few for quotes, as they can vary greatly.

Changing the air filter to the ones you mentioned may give you a couple of BHP - I'm using an ITG with no problems.

Changing the backbox will also release some extra BHP, but the main benefit will be the sound - get that classic "throbba-throbba" that scoobies are famous for !!!! There are many good ones around, with varying prices and varying noise levels.

Can't offer you any advice on DVs.

You might want to consider fitting an aftermarket de-catted downpipe or centre section of the exhaust - this will release more BHP and noise, although may affect warranty if you have one.

The biggest improvement you can make to the MY98 is the brakes - standard setup is very scary. Obviously a nice Brembo or AP setup would be nice, but you would be looking at about £1500 ! If you're on a budget, I would recommend second-hand 4-pot calipers and bigger discs from the MY99 onwards, with uprated pads (Mintex 1155, Ferodo DS2500, Pagid Blue), braided steel brake lines and DOT 5 fluid. This should avoid most brown-trouser moments, but not break the bank.

There's loads more you could do, if you're inclined to modify, have a look at http://www.arnesta.freeserve.co.uk/impreza.htm to see what I've done to mine.

Hope this helps, if you want anything else, give me a sout.

Cheers,

T

Tony,

Thanks for your reply, very helpful, I'm going to call around and get some prices for the service, oh and I'm going to order a ITG Filter to install this weekend!...

I think I'll have to look out for a 2nd hand back box for now!...

Thanks again,
Matt.

Cool

Check out the 'For Sale' forum, think there might be a ScoobySport backbox for sale there. Have a look for some second-hand 4-pots as well.

Best of Luck !

Just had the 120,000 mile service on my 1998 done (same as 60,000 mile one). My local dealer initially quoted £380 but did it for £320 inc vat as they do reduced rated for higher mileage/older cars.

The service changes the fluids and filters/plugs (eng oil, gearbox oil, rear diff oil, brake fluid, coolant, fuel/oil/air filters plus spark plugs). Also inspections such as brakes. So it does most things but NOT the cambelt...

Which Boro?
It is important to identify a reliable garage with Subaru experience for your service and it could be a lot cheaper going to a specialist than a main dealer.
In advance, the garage can show you what the 60k service involves and agree the work required.
A K+N pannel filter and complete Revolution exhaust and down pipe, which is relatively inexpensive, will show noticable power gains.
If Boro is Middlesborough then you have the choice of AS Performance, Birtley, John Pye Motor Sport, Bishop Auckland, or Revolution, Gateshead for servicing.

Question

Cinders,
Are you sure the car is due a 60k service and not the 75k service?
These cars are serviced at 6 month/7.5k intervals (whichever is first) so at 6 months your looking at a 7.5k service, even if the car has only done 3k, at 12 months your at a 15k service, 18 months would be a 22.5k, 24 is a 30k, 30 months is a 37.5k, 36 months is the 45k, 42 months is the 52.5k, 48 months (4 yrs old or my99) is a 60k, 54 months is a 67.5k, 60 (5 yrs) is a
75k service (your most likely).
The one in a years time will be the killer though (a 90k one which is basically the 45 and 30k services together, so put 600 to one side for it!).
Id also suggest the use of super unleaded fuel for your car, its better for it and will show better economy and performance

TonyNesta, IanD, Harvey & Tony Burns...

Guys, just wanted to applaud some excellent, knowledgeable and genuinely helpful answers. This what ScoobyNet is all about - helping each other. Lurked her for a few months and it is sad when a newbie (and even not so newbie) just gets 'Try search'

Well done - I know who to ask when I eventually get my Scoob!

Of course anyone who posts anything remotely SIAL still deserves to get a good roasting!

Edited to add Markwild...

Cool

Cinders, I'm running a 98my UK too.. I'd agree with most here...

I've a full De-cat inc backbox from TSL and an ITG - I've left the standard DV, as I don't need any more WOOSH than the de-cat gives and the DV is WORKING ( )

I've just fitted a Dawes Boost controller, so I'll let you know ....

PS - I've just had a 90K service - I'd set aside a bit more than 600 to be on the safe side, mine was 980 !!!!

see the impreza mods here

Would avoid the ITG and go for the Green cotton filter from TSL.

Hey Guys, thanks for all the great advice, you have been really helpful, I'm very impressed by the list!

The previous Golf GTI list I was on was very helpful and I thought it'd be hard to find as friendly people as them, but indeed I have... (group hug... ha ha!)

Thanks again!

I'm fitting my Green Filter replacement panel this morning, the cars having it's tracker fitted in 3 hours, alongside a nice MP3 unit, and then Tuesday it's in for it's 60,000 mile service, so it should be sweet....

Just on the look out for a 2nd hand replacement backbox now, thats not toooo loud!...

Thanks again,
Matt.!

Cinders, I have the scoobysport back box on my MY 2000 classic UK car. Its quite loud from the outside, without being boomy or too loud inside, even when your booting it at high revs. I didn't realise how gorgeous it sounded from the outside until I heard the mechanic taking it away to have its MOT. Awesome noise, I'd reccomend it and as has been said there's a few for sale on here. Enjoy!

I'm taking the car to Falcon this week for it's service - so they're recommended then? I was going to mark up all the parts that are supposed to be changed in the service, cos £207 all in is very cheap for a 60,000 mile service I thought....

Falcon are very good, they do my oil changes for £70 all in using Castol RS, and genuine Subaru oil filter.

Just be carefull on big jobs as they may be more expensive.

On my last oil change they made some recomendations on things that needed attention....est was £790

But for expertise i cant fault them.

Steve is the bloke to speek to.

I have it too
I have decidet to fit dawes (no Ecutek support for PhaseI )and AVO twinwent bov. My OE is plastic and old so this is the reason. Twinvented becouse car is MAF based and I dont want overfueling at gearchanging.
My other mods are Tarox metal ceramic front disc with WRX 4pots, G88 rear vented disc with 1pot from MY99 and 1155 pads + Sparco brake hoses. Eibach/OE shoks (KYB shoks lives only 2 summers with Eibachs), front and rear arm bars (front Sparco rear DIY) front lower 4 point bar Powerflex bushing MTR swaybar links.
K&N filter + heat shield Samco hoses, IK22 plugs SS DP+BB and ported manifold warped with Thermotec....
So you can spend lot of money to make your car faster
