Cool

Sunday lunchtime and with the engine back in after a rebuild my mind has wandered!!! I have a front mount to fit however before I do I would like to be able to get readings of the inlet temperature before and after the intercooler.
Does anybody do a kit for an inlet temperature gauge, or has anyone built one using other parts?

Cheers

Ivan

im not to sure but i heard that Mapplin electronics sell bits for this type of thing. Its called a K type thermocouple IIRC.
Unless anyone knows different, im not aware of an off the shelf "kit" available. Shame realy as i wouldnt mind knowing these temps also.

Hi
Take a look here. It will need a power supply and thermocouples and takes up to 6 switcheable inputs. Thought of doing something similar.

Shouldn't be difficult to make your own box with switches and display, keep it smaller too.

Hope it helps
Gerry
PS I have or had an account with this Co. so if you have a prob ordering, let me know.

I have just started monitoring temps myself... I've not gone for the snazzy hose just shoved the probe under the existing one and tightened the jubilee clip up lots!

Total cost of $39 aud and 5 minutes soldering even I could do!

AVO do an intercooler hose with a hole for a thermometer for $100 aud P/N WRX-1032-000.

JayCar do a digital thermometer for $39 aud P/N XC0224. The Probe
needs extending so you can have the display in the cabin... It also stores min and max temperatures, and has an alarm feature... Only downside is there is no backlight...

Just out of interest, where is the inlet temp measured by the ECU? I have a MY02 WRX, and get an inlet temp measurement on my SECS display, but I don't know if this is pre- or post- intercooler. I assume that this is post I/C, as with a FMIC and water-spray I can actually get this temp lower than the ambient (at least as displayed by the 'Outside Temperature' display)

Thanks everyone for your help, TC Direct seem to have a few interesting toys! May go for a mini indicator and mini thermocouple to go into the inlet somewhere.
Will let you all know how it goes together and some results.

Cheers

I ordered the LED monitor part number 344-330 and a thermometer M6 bolt which they are making to special order to fit the monitor I have ordered.
Speak to Stuart if you want to deal with them as he has been very helpful.
Total cost about £48 plus p&p.
I ordered 2 of each as I have ideas to measure intake tempreture in the MAF and after the intercooler.

Good luck

Barking Mad...would you say the jaycar kit was decent? Good readings? Is it easy to extend the wiring? Is it a single wire connection?

The JayCar kit is good - two wires per sensor to extend.

Yes, I've had it in for about a month now and it works very well. As Dowser said its just a case of extending 2 wires...

Guys

Have just found out that I can read the charge temperature from the ECU ( Apexi power FC ) so need to find out what I need to wire into to get this.

Okay, just two wires...thanks Richard. Where did you position the sensor for charge temp? Did you drill a hole or just slip it inside the hose on inlet manifold?

Isn't the temp readings from the ECU not charge? Reading the Secs details it confirms not being charge temps...love to know where that sensor gets its readings from but no one seems to know.

They go under the hose connecting between i/c and TB no problems (very small ). The only OE temp probes I've seen have related to air intake temps pre-filter.....ie; next to useless information.

Richard

Cheers Rich...Just want to confirm...you saying the probe should fit inside the short hose that fits between the IC and the inlet manifold - so the hose holds the sensor in place by the wire? Or is there a fitting point on the inlet manifold that you can screw it into? Sorry to be a plank, but it's the 'after' IC temp readings we want yeh.

Ps The external temp sensor (outside air) is different to the inlet (ECU) temp sensor on Secs monitor...but no idea where it's located on the inlet pre-turbo. Both have different readings when car is stuck in traffic.

Cheers dowser...

I've just got the sensor...looks good.

Is there a worry that the sensor could disconnect from the wire and end up in the inlet?

I'm thinking of putting a small hole in the small hose after IC, forcing probe through and using a glue to 'seal' it. Not sure what glue would do it...it would be under pressure...need to be good bond. At least then, if the wire broke, probe would stay in place - not heading for cylinders!
