I experienced severe brake squeal the other day (not for the first time!). I stopped the car, engaged reverse and drove backwards a few yards. On regaining forward motion, the noise had gone.
This practice is not recommended for motorways!

I posted to the IWOC list about brake squeal & the replies seemed to indicate that many people get the same thing.
Perhaps a little poll on this thread would see the extent of this "problem"?

Details: 99my standard, 6000 miles.

I have experienced this with other cars (not MY99 though).
I always found a good emergency stop (where it is safe of course) will clean the brake pads surface and remove access dust from the contact points which can lead to squeling.
Hope it helps

Hi folks,
I get it all the time MY98 turbo. After about 100 miles the front alloys are covered in brake dust. Strangely only about half pressure on the pedal. It doesn't seem to happen on light or heavy braking.

MY99, 450 miles. Brakes have squealed on light braking, at slow speed, from about 50 miles.Brakes work well, although I have never encountered so much brake dust! I put it down to new brakes bedding into the discs. Hope this isn't going to be an ongoing nuisance?

MY BRAKES (MY98) SQUEAL BADLY FROM ABOUT 40 MPH DOWN UNDER LIGHT BRAKING AND STOP SQUEALING JUST BEFORE COMING TO REST. AS MY CAR IS USED FOR DAILY SHORT COMMUTE IN CENTRAL LONDON, TRUST THIS IS JUST BUILD UP OF DUST AND CRAP ON DISCS. ALSO REGUALR BUILD UP OF BRAKE DUST ON FRONT WHEELS AFTER AND A WEEK OF USE PRIOR CLEANING.

WONDER IF A CHANGE OF PADS (TO HIGHER SPEC) WOULD HELP SORT THIS.

OLI.

MY98 - 6000 miles. My brakes have always squealed (medium pressure as described above) and I now put it down to pad material / dust. I first took the pads out (the shims were rusty already). I gave everything a good clean and applied anti-squeal grease. 300 miles no squealing - then it came back. In the meantime a NZ garage had replied to one of my earlier postings suggesting that copper grease was useless and I should try some of the spray / tube glue type materials. I found some (at a car boot sale of all places). Same process again but the squeal is back.
I drove a friends MY99 over the weekend and he thought he heard a squeal for the first time - the brakes do feel much firmer on a MY99 though (and yes I know they are 4 pots).
Sorry I can't solve the problem. Anybody tried other pads that don't suffer this?

.Richard
