Unhappy

What can cause the brake pedal to become rock hard so you can't press it until you rev the throttle?

This only happens occaisionally after just starting the engine.

It's fairly scary.

Faulty brake servo or detached or leaking vacuum hose to the brake servo.

One that isn't knackered!

Alternatively, just remove the servo completely and get used to the permanent hard brake pedal.

Wot Ali-B said. :-)

Seriously, I'd get it sorted out. A cavalier I once owned had a problem with the check/return valve and after a while the inlet pulses wrecked the diaphragm in the servo and the pedal kicked my foot off it. I was trying to avoid a Transit van in a lane at the time. Thankfully I missed it and thankfully it already had mid-brown velour seats :-)

Question

Thanks guys. Where do I find the Check/Return valve, as this will probably be a good place to start. And how can I check it?
