I thought I had something loose in the boot, or behind my seat initially, as I have been getting an intermittent knocking from somewhere round the rear quarter.
I can get the noise if, for example I floor it in 2nd, the come quickly off the gas, getting some engine braking - it will knock for about a second.
I am still under warranty (just), so was thinking maybe diff/bearings etc.
Any ideas?
PS, it's a 98 wagon Impreza Turbo.

Hello there,
I have a mechanic friend who has a 2002 spec c impreza.
His only has a couple of thousand miles on it and is experiencing the same problem.
I think its showing up on his car sooner due to the amount of power this model makes as standard(320 bhp and hes clocked 12.8 1//4 mile at york)
He found it to be noisy due to having no sound insulation too.
It been traced to the ram in the damper, it moves fractionally in the damper assembly.(side to side)
Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. I was planning on putting my car into Subaru anyway, prior to expiry of warranty, for a full checkover. I will mention it to them.

get the N/S/R shocker unit changed, they have had quite a few of these go noisey, best get it done sooner than later and out of warranty.
But would also check see if the bolts that hold the rear seat support bars have rattled loose, you know the two bars either side of the ski hatch, also a common problem .

Sorted
Took it into Subaru today, after a test drive mechanic had a look round and found that one of the brackets holding the cross-member was slightly bent up, causing a knocking against the cross-member on engine braking. Bent back, job done!
