JANSPEED EXHAUSTS
Can anyone out there supply any feedback on Janspeed systems for the Impreza.
Has anyone fitted a system to their cars and if so what performance gains are to be had.
I have had dealings with janspeed many moons ago on escorts and found them to be pretty good. The reason i am so curious is that a full system costs only £225 and a back box only £125 this seems rather cheap, but genuine many thanks for some details.

A guy visits our Industrial Estate occasionaly and has the Janspeed system fitted.
1. It is a DTM style. Good on Golfs but IMHO look out of place on an Impreza. Also a bit 1995/7 not 1999.
2. The noise sounded tinny. Thats probably why its so cheap. Its all treble and no bass. The rest of the office agreed with me and thats unheard of.
If I bought an Impreza with a Janspeed exhaust on it would be the first thing changed. The extra money you pay for a quality backbox is worth it. I only have experience of Scoobysports unit. This will help with pickup when combined with the panel filter and gain you about 8bhp. Not sure how much more you would gain from a full system (not much I guess 2bhp maybe).

ScoobySport's web page states that their exhaust is not noticably(?) louder when in the car. What the reality of this?
The reason I ask is that I have a Mongoose stainless on my Escort and inside it sounds as follows:
@1000-2000 rpm = Great low subtle sound
@2000-3000 rpm = As standard Ford system
@3000-4000 rpm = Loud, boomy and very R5 Turbo!
@4500+ rpm = Rattly and harsh

Hi TC
I have a full Janspeed SS1 system on my September 1998 4 Door Turbo.
1. It sounds great at low speed but not too noisy at motorway speeds.
2. The engine revs easier with the Janspeed system fitted.
3. I think its worth the money, some of the negative comments about the Janspeed system on your replys are plain rubbish.
I would be quite surprised if the Janspeed WASN'T any good seeing as they must be one of the oldest & most experienced companies in this line.
OMP also do a Grp.N (Cat replacement) full system for the impreza for similar money - Demon Tweeks sell it.
A couple of points worth thinking about are:
Do you want to remove the cat or not? - could be a hassle with the MOT
Do you want it in Mild or Stainless Steel - whilst mild steel ones are cheaper they only last a few years - most stainless steel ones come with a virtually lifetime guarantee.
Personally i've used ANSA, OMP, Janspeed & Scorpion on various different cars (not imprezas) - they all were fine.
Myself, i'll probably buy a Scoobysport over the next few weeks purely on the basis that so many folk on the SIDC are obviously very happy with them and hence it won't wreck your car or make it so loud you can't drive it for more than 10 minutes at a time......

I have seen Janspeed's work on programming a Zytech management system on my BMW 333i turbo. The programming work was appalling & I would never dream of using any Janspeed product.
Likewise, BBR thought it would be a good performance upgrade to put a 325i aftermarket exhaust backbox on the same 333i.
Just because a company has good marketing - doesn't mean their products are any good.

I've had Janspeed manifolds & systems before on a Mk2 RS2000 and a Sunbeam 1600Ti - they fitted easily, gave a noticeable performance improvement, were very noisy and lasted as long as i had the cars.
p.s. i think BMW is the perfect example of the triumph of marketing over product.
I guess Nick's BMW could comfortably out-run our Impreza's (and probably most other cars on the road), except perhaps in the snow and heavy rain
I seem to remember it has 400+bhp and 500+ lb/ft of torque

Thanks. I was just giving feedback on my actual experience with Janspeed (& BBR). I have found that tuners often have no problem with mass market upgrades, but when they have to work on something unusual - it tends to sort out which company knows their stuff.

In terms of performance-per-pound and value for money,I still think the MONGOOSE system takes some beating(£480).I'm sure it must liberate around 15-20 BHP and it does last forever. However it is a bit naughty(doing away with both CATS) and of course you do need to put the old exhaust back on every MOT.I don't find it particularly intrusive as regards internal noise either and aesthetically it's subtle.
Rob,
I agree - I used to have the same straight through exhaust on my MY97 UK spec car.
It was a great system that released quite a bit more torque & power, although I thought it was a little too noisey for the neighbours!
The trouble I had at the time was that I was forever having the thing removed & then re-fitted, for visits to my local disapproving Subaru dealer - servicing, parts etc.
I now have a Scoobysport system on my STi V and this is a welcome improvement, in terms of convenience & noise levels - I'm also very impressed with the improvement to the torque curve and the ability to rev more freely at higher revs.
Stuart Petersen will, I'm sure, validate this observation, as he's recently taken it for a test drive.
Can't wait to try the downpipe!
