Relay ticking in stop/start traffic

Got stuck in a motorway jam at the weekend and noticed a strange ticking noise from 'behind the dashboard' or more likely from the relays down by your right knee
Every time I slowed down to a virtual stop, there was a tick, and every time I started gently accelerating forward and started moving again (at approx >2mph) there was another tick
Sounded like a relay opening and closing, but can't think what the relay could possibly be controlling
unless it was motion detection related to the ABS ?
Anyone any ideas

Have a look at the thread i have started on ticking this sounds very similar. I intitialy thought my problem may have been a motion sensor, but couldnt think where from ! I was thinking from my alarm ?

I have experienced a similar problem with MY93 WRX - However I could watch the volt meter and could see that as the tick would first happen the radiator fan would start up. If I then touched the throttle (as in the move off) I would get another click where the fan would then stop ?! The weird thing was the fan would come on with the click and if I just touch the throttle I would get another tick and the fan would switch off. The click would always happen when the rev counter hit 800rpm or in other words idle but just a touch of the throttle would switch the fan off again....weird. Have you tried this cos it sounds similar ?
I think it may have been the aircon relay or something ?

I've just buggered up my ECU, every now and again the tick over gets really erratic and when that happens I get a relay clicking noise from behind the rev counter area. Is that where you're hearing it too?

Thanks for the answers
I'm pretty sure it is the radiator fan syndrome
as I was crawling forward in 1st with revs dipping below 800rpm frequently, and then rising again
Can't remember if I had the air con on or off at the time
(if on, then the secondary fan would have been on continuously ?)
