I know its been done to the death, but I am not sure if I have the sensor in the best position. It is placed on the nearside side of the manifold.

I have tapped the manifold quite hard with a socket in the centre of the manifold, and ir barely lights up, even though you can hear the tap from inside the car, tapping the opposite side of the manifold hard does not register at all.

I am now thinking that the sensor may not be picking up all knock. I have searched and seen some interesting info on where to put it, I have had a look at my STI 1996 and cannot see the same threaded holes (ie below intercooler), if anyone has any info or even hands on help, It would be much appreciated.

I have also tried to put the sensor under the I/C near the earth wire position, just to the front a bit, there is a thread hole. Does anyone know what size bolt will be needed, I did not take the I/C off, but tried to get an M8 40 mm in and it does not seem the correct size, anyone know???? Any Info?

I think you've got the right position - I checked many threads on here as I've just got mine installed - best way to describe the position is to find the earth stap bolt to the front-right hand side of the i/c then look for a threaded hole.
I 'think' the bolt I used was an M8 x 25mm and I used a deep 12mm socket on an extension bar to tighten - it's slihtly obstructed by a hose which you can push out of the way. The bolt went into the hole a few turns but a slightly longer one might be better.
If you don't remove or loosen the I/C brackets then it's a total git to access so it may just be that you've not got the bolt positioned in the hole quite right.
Fitted to a 95WRX so other models may differ as some people seemed to say that there was already a bolt present.

Thanks Andy, yep I think I need to remove the right hand side I/C bracket, and yes there is a pipe in the way. Mine is 1995/1996 STI with slanted intercooler same as the 95 WRX. I keep almost dropping the f***ing bolts, think I will need to undo the right hand I/C Bracket, as I have hands that work like if I have mittens on, and have not got very artistic or long fingers.

Sorted, just needed to slacken off the Intercooler, and an M8 40 mm seems to do the trick. Thanks everyone and especially Jake
