The restrictor (i think) is in the pipe that comes from the turbo nipple and joins another pipe.. not sure what difference it would make running without it... Mr rawle et al might be able to help out..

Having just removed my Turbosmart boost controller and hooked up my standard boost solenoid, I'm now boosting to >20psi

I just want to check my pipework is right:

Solenoid has 3 outlets top, middle and bottom.

Top goes to the turbo outlet before the intercooler
Middle goes to the intake just after the MAF
Bottom goes to wastegate

Is this right?

Car is a MY93 WRX

did you put the restrictor back in that joins the pipe from the turbo nipple to another pipe that goes to the boost solonoid.

looks like you may just have the pipe from the turbo nipple venting straight into the air inlet hence the 20psi..??? i could be wrong.

Sounds like that could be it. I put the mbc back in for now until I get more playing time.

Actually, bugger it, I'm leaving the Turbosmart in place, spool up seems to be much quicker. The guy in the 52 reg Porsche Carrera seemed impressed, anyway

Top = turbo
Middle = wastegate
Bottom = inlet tract.

I was about to try again when I twigged on to the question about the restrictor above.

When I bought the car, it had a bleed valve fitted (I fully closed it as I was hitting fuel cut), which was replaced when the Turbosmart device was fitted so I have no restrictor in line anywhere that I can make out.

My questions are:

Where should the restrictor sit?
Do I need a restrictor?
Where can I get a restrictor, are UK ones the same as JDM? (i.e. can I visit my local friendly Subaru dealer?)
Is there an advantage to running a different sized restrictor?
