Went to reset the chip today for the first time in my TypeR STI5 and was looking for the green and black terminals to connect.

After about 20 mins of looking and only managing to locate the green terminals I connected them together and continued with the procedure. I got all the clicking and the rest went OK.

Seems the black terminals were already connected and I don't know which ones they are to disconnect. Do you think I'll be OK to leave them as they were?

Thanks

The black terminals weren't already connected. If they were, your check engine light would constantly be flashing!

They'll be there somewhere, possibly taped up under the steering column. You need both green and black connected to reset the ECU. Green along will just put the car in Test mode.

Not quite the same shape as far as I recall. Think the green ones have two wires in each plug, and the black ones are single wire. The general design is similar though - the plugs only fit together one way and there's that awkward little clip to hold them together.

An STi 5 is an MY99 car, and as such, shouldn't benefit from am ECU reset (as I believe the chips learning process is much quicker!)

At last, I found the little buggers completly hidden in tape.

I'm just running some tests and want the factory setup as a base.

Also, the learning process can take up to a full tank, the reset takes 2 mins.

After finally resetting the ECU I took it out for a spin and for the first 5 minutes, I was only getting 0.6bar of boost.

Obviously I **** my pants, but now its back up to 1.2bar. Whats that all about?? Is this a feature??

Did you still have the plugs connected when it was underboosting? If so the cause would have been the ECU running in "safe" mode.

If it was doing it after you disconnected the plugs, could be safe mode caused by a badly misreading sensor, could also be a not-quite-so-badly-misreading sensor fooling the ECU.

Either way, it would be worthwhile driving with care and paying particular attention to what the engine's doing, as this could be early signs of a sensor on the way out.

One thing to try might be to reconnect the black plugs, turn the ignition on and see what CEL code you get. Anything other than OK and the alarm bells really start ringing. Even if you do get the OK though, keeping a close eye on the way the car runs won't do you any harm
