Went out for a scooby meet last week 14 of us, I was the only on without a dumpvalve. Next door neighbour keeps telling me I need one and the student a work say's its a must on a scooby.
Anyway what does everybody recomend and is there anything that can hurt the engine by fitting one. Are there any that chirp like a WRC?

What are these idiots talking about? All turbocharged Imprezas come with a dump valve fitted from the factory, so to say you "need" one is plain bogus. So is any suggestion that replacing the factory one is a "must".

If, OTOH, they're suggesting you replace the factory fit one with an aftermarket product that will make more noise, that, of course, is a slightly different matter. If you want to join their gang and have one that pshhhhts and wheezes all the time, it's your option.

On the other hand, if you'd rather make your own choice to stick with the standard one, tell the clueless student, your neighbour and whoever else is trying to "bully" you into this, to f*** off. It's your car, not theirs!

Yes, there are valves that'll try and similate that sort of sound, but trying to get the same sound will take a huge amount off the working life of your turbo, so whether you want to go this route or not is entirely up to you!

As above, what are these people talking about
Your Scoob, like everybody else, has a recirculating dump valve fitted as standard.

When i got my Sccob, first thing i wanted to do was get a Psssstss dumpvalve, but after having it for a month or two i soon changed my mind and went back to a resirc, although not the factory one.

Its a matter of personal choice, if you want a Pssstss get one.

I know mine has a recirculating dump valve they were all on about ones to atmosphere that make silly noises.
I think i might stick with the standard and blow the money on some driving lights to replace the fogs.

Good move. Much better to be able to see where you're going than have your car fart every time you lift off!

I'm a Scoobie Newbie toying with the idea of a dump valve that makes a ptssshhh noise when I'm booting it. But my WRX is my 'mostly driving calmly on the way to work' car so I'm keeping the standard quiet exhaust. Am I right in thinking that an aftermarket dump valve will only make a noise if I'm doing about 4500 revs or more? If it does it on every gear change without a loud exhaust, I'll just look really gay!

LOL. Thanks a lot GreaseMonkey. Don't want to upset my girlfriend - think I'll forget the noisy dump valve idea!

I don't think I dare telling the 13 other's on the next meet that they are gay because they have an atmospheric dump valve.

Andy,

I only have the standard dump valve. It makes a bit more noise 'cos i'm running 1.37bar of boost. Further to your enquiries I am not a "gay boy" either!

PPSHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhttttt

You're incorrect in thinking that it only opens up above 4500, it'll open a lot earlier than that if there's positive pressure in the induction tract and you lift off.

In practice, this does mean a "noise" of some sort on most gearchanges, albeit that it won't be the full-fledged article if you're keeping the revs/boost down. As you suspect, there's a risk that you'll sound a bit confused about your sexuality, but if you like that sort of thing, don't let us hold you back!
