I have a jap imported MY94 WRX STI. AA guy told me that he thought the small ends were away in my engine, dont drive it and its would be serious engine damage. I could hear knocking noises only at idle, but not when driving.

Non mechanical minded I am, so what exactly are they and anything I should do at the same time when I get it in for repair?

I know its an engine out job, and a fair amount of £££'s by all accounts.

Please someone put me out my misery.

You need a second opinion realy.
You cant go to the expense of having the engine taken out and stripped on the basis of that.
However, if it is knocking, ie, not a rattle, it dose'nt sound good.
Could be bigend bearing failure, in which case it is an engine out job and strip.
