Not wanting to put words in anyone's mouths, but I think you might find that it's more than just spftware changes that'll be necessary for these boxes to work on the pre-99 cars.

Could tell you, but I'd be lyin'! The 98 and earlier cars use a different physical interface format to the 99 onwards, hence the need for different hardware.

That said, the interface and data formats of the older ECU's are in the public domain, so I can't see what's taking them so long.
