AirCon maintenance
#1
Does somebody know what maintenance is needed on the Aircon? I have a MY99 with an AirCon and upto now (66000 km) nothing was done on the AirCon, except that the mechanic put something in the vents (from under the glovebox) to disinfect the venting system & remove the bad smell caused by bacteria...
I mean is there no liquid, oil etc change needed or some other cleaning maintenance on these?

Funny enough, called up the dealer and spoke to the chief mechanic who told me that no maintenance is needed on the Aircon.
I told him that the Aircon makes a quite loud noise (wooshing) when turned on and this sound repeats itself every 1 or 2 minutes.
Mechanic said this is the compressor sound and is normal.
Guess I'll have to write a letter to Subaru Belgium to get an official response on Aircon's...

We tend to find that ,due to the nature of the refridgerant used these days, it "naturally" decomposes over a period of time. Best check is to look at the "sight glass" on top of the air con filter, with the engine/air con running.
If it appears clear, no problem, if any bubbles or "fizzyness" appears, then the system is showing signs of loss of contents.
Many air con specialists do reccommend an "annual service", but all they do is "remove, re oil, refill" the system, plus charging you for your gas they removed in the first place, so you pay "twice"
It is impossible to say how long the gas will keep going, each system does have its own "life span".
Only when the electric fan [secondary] runs almost full time, or if the air con vents seem warm would you need to seek further work, but then, check yellow pages, as many companies can recharge the system, it does not have to be a dealer.....
