If it is an older WRX, it will be the speedo cable clicking. It may now be worn at the head end or it may be the converter box if your car has been changed from KPH to MPH. My WRX did this on and off for a while, sometimes the clicking was worse than at other times.

Assuming that the speedo is working OK. Is it the main mileometer which doesn't register or the trip readout. I hope the guy hasn't knackered your speedo head unit when he refitted the cable. The internal gearing inside the head units is very weak, they normally get damaged when someone tries to reset the readout when changing from KPH to MPH so that the correct miles are displayed (sometimes for more sinister reasons!) I hope it's just your cable cos the head units are expensive, I think I paid about £280 for a new one to be imported for me

the mileometer does not work the trip meter does but the speedo needle is jumpy when it registered speed i had the auto box changed a month back a i think they removed the box with out disconnecting the speedo cable thus damaging it ?

Those symptons are exactly the same as I had when I had to replace the complete speedo head unit. I hope it's just the cable that needs replacing (or refitting properly) but i fear the worst
Are you sure that someone hasn't attempted to alter your mileage setting recently?
I wouldn't remove the turbo heat shield, it's too close to things like the brake res etc not to mention your speedo cable (which will melt!) Are you sure it's that that's rattling, or could it be lower down and a cracked heatshield on the exhaust system which is very common?

boy, dragging back the memory here!
I think the ECU takes some info from the speedo and so registers a fault if the speedo stops working (which presumably it did when the cable broke?). You then get an engine check warning coming on and it might even go into limp home mode (cuts boost etc). Has this light only started to come on since the cable broke?
Your then into checking what faults have been logged by the ECU by connecting the ECU code connector together under the dash which makes the engine check flash a number of times. These codes equate to a specific fault i.e. MAF failure, cam sensor etc. You would need to do a search for ECU codes on here to find out more. I would think you would be OK to just reset the ECU and clear the codes once you've got the speedo sorted out completely.

ok what you said about the speedo cable was spot on the clicking has stopped i disconnected the cable at the engine now the green light flashing on startup it must be detecting the speedo disconnected.
