Recently had a new crank, full set of bearings and an oil pump fitted to my MY00 after the big ends went, this was all replaced under warranty by a main dealer. During the run in period (no more than 3000rpm for 10000 miles) the thing purred like a kitten, truly beautiful, no taps, clicks whirrs.....nuffink.
Recently it was pointed out to me by a passenger that when sitting in traffic, the whole car rocks and wobbles.
51000 service came up and in went the car, I informed the dealership (not the one that carried out the rebuild) about my car and it's 'overloaded washing machine on spin cycle' impression.
Picked car up later that day, told nothing wrong with it, not convinced I just had PowerEngineering give my beasty the once over, they found:
Incorrectly gapped plugs, 2 broken plug leads & one choked up air filter!! After replacing all this the car still behaves as if I have a loose engine mounting (I don't) Onto the rolling road for diags and tuning.................Perfect score 145BHP, no ecu errors, The guy who looked after my car all day can only offer the following........That is the roughest running Scoob I ever sat in, made me feel ill after a while, wish I knew what to suggest mate, but there is nothing wrong that I can see, it aint right tho.

Any suggestions?

Does the rev on tickover jump up and down. I have a MY99 and about six months ago replaced the MAF for a lumpy idle which shook the car on tickover. The original MAF was not showing any error codes as it was not completely knackered. 70 quid for a new MAF sorted it.

Originally forgot to mention when I drove very easy the car behaved normally but after a good thrash lumpy came back.

DOH....245BHP ....spot the muppet.

As for 'engine hunting'....nothing, nadda, as smoooooooth as you like.......They made a point of checking and rechecking the MAF, could not find anything......I wondering if I got an unbalanced con-rod??

A few years ago, I had a heavily modified 95 WRX import.

Long and short if it was that the engine blew, snapped 1st gear, blah blah blah. flywheel/clutch/ etc etc.

When my car was stationary is would rock from side to side just as you described. It would also skip revs when accelerating hard in 5th gear.

I too took mine to PE, and Merv and Dave took it out and couldn't fathom why it was doing it. Merv said the rocking feeling was awful.

Anyhow, the next week I got rid of it and traded it in.......

Just an idea, but my car used to do this and when i recently had the cam belt changed the bloke who fitted the new one said that the cam belt was one tooth out, which i believe can lead to rough idle.... its now fine..!!!

Thanks to Bottomfeeder for putting into words so perfectly the feeling that I've been telling my dealer is cabin shake.
Of course, the dealer can't find owt wrong with mine either but I too am starting to feel sick when waiting at lights - shake, shake, shake.

Interesting to see a new MAF cured this for Postman Pat (I'll do this ASAP), but as my 'rocking and rolling' tickover started immediately after a cambelt change could my new cambelt be to blame?

Sorry to hijack this thread but I would also welcome ideas.

Further question re: timing tooth.

Would that account for the symptoms only appearing occasionally or would you expect car to be shaking all the time at idle?

PE checked everything including weather or not I was wearing clean underwear !!!! My compression was apparently "very good" 196,195,193,196.............I think that is what was written on the job sheet, My MAF was checked and given a clean bill of health, as was my Lambda, my 'fuelling' and various other weird and wonderful sensors, swithes and things I knew nothing about.
They seem to think that perhaps I have an unbalanced Conrod, Crank was discounted as engine not "as bad as it would be if your crank was unbalanced"...Oh well back off to the cigarette people who rebuilt my car, to once again insist this isn't right.

Angry

I told them it wasn't right,
I told them I wasn't happy with it,
They insisted it was " perfectly normal"
and now they can rebuild my engine again !!!!!

Wink

After my 45 k service my engines idle was as rough as f**c. Not sure what it was like when I drove it hard, as it was a long time ago, and I drove it carefully as I was concerned. It was like an engine mount was broken when looking at the engine while revving it. The whole car was shaking. Spoke to a Subaru mechanic that was a mate, and he suggested checking the cam belt timing.

The cam belt had been fitted incorrectly and was a tooth out (I think) The dealers blamed it on a faulty cam tensioner and after a new belt was fine again!!

Not saying that is your problem, but worth checking ??

Phill
