Looking at a Type R Import
#1
Hi peeps,
I went to pick up my Pug after a new rad was fitted. They (the garage whom i trust) also looked at the breaks for me. The disks and pads are warped on the front, after having only been replaced less than 18 months ago.
Anyhow to cut long story short, getting shut and buying a scooby if finances allow.
Now this garage whom I trust have just finished repairing a S Reg type r that had a front on, airbags deployed etc but it was only done by the people I trust AFTER a third party (putting it politly) tried to repair it. They ran the car withoud a rad (even *I* know not to do that). Then it got passed to the garage (Scoob experts) who fixed it, skimmed the head, new pistons, rings and gasket and put right what has gone wrong. The car seems to be a good price. Just a little unsure regarding the engine.
Any advice ?

Just to further on my comment,
I imported one from Japan. It was an TypeR STI V V-Limited. It has 30K miles on, full Subaru history, and is absolutly perfect in every way. Not even a stone chip when it arrived here.
This car cost me £14K on the road with a full 12 month warranty about 3 months ago. Its on a V plate.
This car was a grade 4.5. (not a 5 cos the Jap ***** had screwed a boost guage into the dash....idiot) You can pick up grade 3 to 4 TypeR's for much less than this and will not have been 'rebuilt'
Your choice, but I would not be over keen on buying a TypeR that had been in a accident as well as a full engine rebuild.
If you can 100% trust these people, it may be worth considering, but also do research elsewhere. You can import mint Evo5's for 10K now

Yup, I agree with Gedi on this.
One word of warning, the warranty is normally not worth the paper it's written on. JDM car's rarely have paperwork with them (even if they did it would be in Japanese) so you have to take a bit of a risk buying these cars, I gave up looking for a JDM with history after 6 weeks of looking.
I would also try and get a standard one rather than one that's been modded, especially if it's not been modded in the UK and you have no idea what's been done to the car. (some the Type-R's I looked at had rollcages, strange ECU's etc..)

Skimming heads on a STi car IS NOT a good idea. Beware the dreaded ' big end problem'

It is cheap for a V5 TypeR, but you have to take into consideration its been in a bang, and its had an engine rebuild.
You can bring TypeR's over for the cash they are talking that have had neither.
As craigfin says, it does cause a bit of hastle, but look at the money your saving. Also there is much more choice over in Japan than you get over here. I was viewing aprox 10 cars per week from different auctions.
I picked my own spec. Had to be Sonic blue, a V-Limited, be completly standand except for an exhaust etc... I got exactly what I asked for.
Its your choice, but I would prefer my STI engine and body work to be original.
