Pros: Less constricted induction path leading to more induction/recirc dump valve noise, and, theoretically, more power.
Cons: Increased risk of MAF sensor damage due to contamination and/or vibration
Questionable power gains due to tendency to suck in hotter air from engine bay than would happen with conventional induction (unless a cold air inlet was fitted).
For my money, the standard induction plus a K&N or Green panel filter is the best compromise.

Concensus (sp?) also seems to be it depends on the MY of the car - the older cars 'appear' to have fragile MAF's, whereas the new shape have more resistant devices.
Could well be that the new shape have not yet been 'tested' to the same degree, but 'good' reliability has been reported so far (on Scoobynet at least!)
I personally have a K+N filter on a cold air intake (MY02), and the increase in noise was quite amazing. This was mainly installed as I have a FMIC and had to remove the airbox anyway.
If you are not going for 'big' power then the panel filters will keep most of the 'standard' qualities - especially if is a family daily driver.
Whatever you do - don't throw rocks at the MAF!

MY99 and MY00 have by far the majority of MAF failures due to the fragile nature of the device ("hot wire" ?) used on those models.
Having said that the K&N 57i is considered to be fairly safe even for those models. It has a strong bracket which virtually elliminates vibration which seems to be the favourite explaination for MAF failures. I hav been using the K&N for nearly 2 years on my MY00 with no probs.

ive got a GGR induction kit on my 2002 wrx and have coverd over 15k with it fitted and no problems at all . i had a pannel filter in prior and noticed a maked improvment more solid boost better topend power as for the heat under bonnet i think this is only an issue ( flame suit on ) when statonary .. all i can comment from is my own experiance and mine is better with it ..... by the way its a dry K&N cone .................... chris
