Oops. The MAF sensor (aka airflow meter, mass air flow sensor etc. etc.) sits in the inlet tract and lets the ECU know the amount of air going in, so the correct air/fuel ratio can be calculated.
If yours is partially buggered, you could suffer a range of symptoms from lean running to rich running, neither of which is good for your engine. If you're getting a CEL light saying it's failed completely though, the ECU will probably adopt "safe" settings. Either way though, you want to get it replaced ASAP.
About the only other thing that would cause this error is forgetting to reconnect the MAF after changing the air filter, so if you've recently been poking around under the bonnet, it'd be worth checking. The sensor is located in the pipe immediately after the filter box.

Thanks for the reply.
The engine will start sometimes and run for 8-10 secs then cut out. It will never idle either but if you keep the revs up it seems to be fine. The CEL came on and this has now went off again.
Looks like tryng a replacement air flow meter will be the best bet.

Common problem on MY99/00 V5/6 cars. Had 2 go within 4 weeks and they are known to blow running standard filters never mind induction kits
Part No 22794AA010 Meter CP-Air Flow, should cost about £75.
Loads of threads on this subject, if you do a search you'll be surprised at the amount of problems they have caused
Also there was a bit of a shortage recently but hopefully thats ben sorted now

Only when it's totally gone. To know that it's on it's way out, the only easy way to know is by observing the AFR under load at the lambda.
The reason why AFR guages are so popular!

I think if the select monitor is connected to the car and the car is then taken for a drive, at full load ,say in third gear, from 3000 to 6800rpm the AFRs should be able to be viewed to determne if the MAF is on it's way.
As Tom said with a select monitor you will only be able to see a fully knackered MAF, but that's if the dealer does what most do and only checks it on idle. For a full diagnosis, the car must be driven as I mentioned above.
Cheers,
George.
