From quite a few reviews I have seen, there is very very little difference in flow rates between the top filters.

The biggest difference between them is the amount of turbulence created after the filter, less turbulence the better which increases the life of the air flow meter and provides the engine management with a more accurate figure of what is actually passing through.

The size is not a huge problem but the effective filtering area which is directly proportional to the cubic inch displacement and the rpm where your car achieves max HP

It may have been asked before, but a recent article in a magazine ( involving a certain subaru, although I havent seen the article myself yet ) makes me ask again.
What air filter is best??? For both flow, and filtration, and preferably keeping the size down.
I had been told by GGR, that the HKS were one of the best. I do find it a bit hard to believe, given that they look very small.
Has anyone really done any tests on the aftermarket kits, as they come??
Are the HKS filters any good?? If not, at what sort of power levels do they really become a restriction??
I know a huge K+N would be ideal, but if space is tight.......

Thumbs up

Depends entirely on the year of your car.

If it's a MY99/00 then stay away from anything oil based (ie. ITG etc)as the MAF's are so easily contaminated then *boom*

Found Green cotton to be fine with mine after engine no 1 went boom whilst using an ITG

Cheers
Si

The HKS, I have is really good for power gain, but mine's coming off sson for a panel filter for the sake of MAF sensors, not only expensive but difficult to get hold off.

What bhp is the HKS good for then, I have a 94 wrx, I too thought my HKS was small so I have just replaced it with a larger cone type filter, would my HKS give less turbulence than the cone filter.

Should I stick with my HKS

I ask, becasue yes Michael will be using an 80mm inlet HKS, and I am also now using 2 HKS 70mm inlet on my car.

Just wondering really. I have tried various air filters, but a Michael mentioned about an article in Banzai featuring a certain high powered estate car, that gained 15hp by changing the filter, which I think was HKS....
I still havent read it myself though.

Would the owner of the said car, care to comment please??

Stevie

I'm with Submannz. Check out the surface area of the filter. The standard one is just over 39,000mm2. If the cone filter you are going to use is less than this, it will only flow as much air (let alone more) if the filtration is poor.

Also, be VERY careful of fitting filters with different pipe sizes at the MAF. 80mm from 70mm is a 30% increase in cross section. If the air is going 30% slower, the engine will fuel at 30% less... if the MAF is not recalibrated at the ECU.

Neither cars I mention have an AFM.
I just think, that the HKS filters look very small. It looks more like the filter itself would be more of a restriction, than the diameter of the hole, be it 70 or 80mm.

So is the opinion, that the HKS SMF 200mm dia filters are non restricitive, to say 500hp ( I should be so lucky ) reasonable??? to put it in a simpler question.
