Exclamation

Hi all,

I have a nasty screeching noise from my MY94 WRX, coming from the turbo heatshield / wastegate actuator area. Only does it at 2-3k rpm, which is quite annoying as you can imagine!

Any ideas? It happens when accelerating or slowing down. I cant see anything obvious and cant pin point it exactly.

It sounds a little like a bad brake squeal / loose fan belt etc.

Ta,

Maybe there is a loose bolt on the heatshielding somewhere and it is vibrating. My cracked lower heat shield screeches at exactly 2.5K when it is cold. Thank goodness it is coming off tomorrow!

Hope it's not your turbo bearing!

Mark,
I'm sure you'll get to the point when fixing it becomes just as enjoyable as driving it, when you do more fixing than driving, sell it!!

Mark,

had the same problem, almost sounded like a belt screaming.
trying to isolate which belt and the sound seemed to be coming from the turbo area.

It was the heatshield on the drivers side header, problem was isolated using a big stick. Pop the bonnet, start the car and bring the revs up to where the squeal is happening. Use big stick to put pressure on the top of the heatshield.
When I did it, the sound went away. The heatshield had a big crack that was fixed using another bit of ally as subaru want stupid money to fix it.

Chock, like your style. Will try it.

John, I think the tubo's fine, it would be more of a rattle. Its definately near the wastegate.

Ron, the car's great, just a couple of niggly things. Just got to sort the mirror and get the wheels on!
