What power can an sti4 top mount achieve?
#3
Hi Nick,
A friend of mine has an Sti 4 and it runs at around 1.3/1.4 bar boost. I don't know what power it makes though, and how good the cooling would be at that boost level.
Would be interesting to know as I have a UK MY98 with this intercooler and will be going for more power soon.
TD05 front entry
550 Injectors
Uprated fuel pump and regulator
Remapped ECU

You're asking a very open question expecting a specific answer.
Sti4 top mount with what other mods? How much safety? For track or road use? An intercooler is only a small part of the equation.

is it a jap sti4 or a uk sti4? some ppls on here have got away with 350bhp with stock intercooler. you might want to speak to RICHWILD, he has a pretty powerful machine using standard internals.

Never heard of an STi4 UK ....
Rich's cars both have uprated intercoolers, an MRT TMIC and a HKS FMIC. As far as im aware he's never used and STi4 intercooler. Either way as said above the question is too open..... depends on the turbo to a great extent along with all the other bits and bobs. Personally i think that above about 325-330bhp the TMIC would struggle, even at that sort of bhp and the level of boost needed the inlet temps migh be a little too high for my liking.
Tony.

Its with a vf28. On a uk my97.
I'm asking for a ballpark figure really, just want to know if I'll need a front mount?
I dont really want to spend any more on the soddin money pit.

Did someone mention me?
I think what has been said so far is pretty much right.
There are a lot of factors to consider in determining what is a SAFE power figure with a top mount, like the turbo, the fuelling (eg uprated pump) and whether you use octane booster or not.
Both myself and Trout (that I know of) have managed well into the mid 300s on uprated (MRT) top mounts, but on the OEM I'd agree with Tone that (guessing) 320-330 is pushing it a bit. That's not to say you couldn't run more (with all the necessary safeguards of course), but if you did you'd be right on the edge of things. A VF28 is a smallish turbo, so running high boost will be putting a fair old amount of heat into the inlet charge for the TMIC to handle. So, if you haven't already, and you plans are for 300+, invest in a Knocklink for sure. Are the fins of your TMIC all straight or are they a bit mashed? as that will also make a difference.
For any more power a FMIC is an expensive option, but pretty much essential really, I'd say.
