The cable driven speedo must only be to MY94 or MY95 - my MY96 has an electronic speedo with the gearbox speed connector. (well, I didn't see any cables when I took it apart...)

Cool

MY97 STI 3 still had a cable drive speedo.
I believe the change to electronic speedo occurred at the same time as the switch to the newer style interior.

Moray - you've got me confused now. I'm going to have to look under my car now to find out.

Just don't make me take the dash apart again....

Ah - the gromet around the clutch area?

If so, there is no cable - I used it to route my gauge wiring/plumbing!

My car is UK, so there is no conversion box. Maybe the difference is more related to UK/Jap cars than MY?

Should have explained better..

My car is MY94 UK 5DR..

My new gearbox is sti7 6spd.. however the thread for the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is different to that of the MY01+

Just wondering if the squarewave / hall effect whatever it uses output is the same so that I could machine up a vss to fit..

WRX's dont use a speed sensor they have a cable driven speedo.. unsure if the speedo has a pick up for the ecu.. infact it must due to the 112mph limit...

Eitherway the UK cars have a sensor that screws in to the top of the box at the rear.

Looking at the sensor on the Jap 6speed, it looks to be the same as the ones I have seen fitted to classic UK Imprezas, or UK legacy's. Havent unscrewed it from the 6speed though.

Unfortunately, it may be the other way round. The 90 Jap legacy is a cable speedo car, and the 6speed box has an electronic sender. Not sure what way it will work out. Still havent done any work towards fitting it yet
Only thing I can say, is that we did measure the propshaft, and would be certain the auto shaft will fit. 7 weeks to go ??? Oh **** !!!

Sorry to highjack but, would I be right in saying that if the cable drive was knackered in a '94 car then the ECU would at some point decide the Vehicle speed sensor was faulty. (i.e. cruising in 5th close to what would be 112mph) ?

a 94 wrx has a cable.. which could break however the car has a limiter at 112mph.. speed sensor faults show with a check engine light..

the 94uk has no speedocable, but and electric speedo sensor

hope this helps..

Thanks for the reply David, could I trouble you a bit further.

Car is a '94 RA.
Speedo is not working.
After a while sitting on MotorWay in 5th, the engine check light comes on. Car is thin in limp home mode.
Checking the fault code and it says that the Vehicle speed sensor is faulty. Is this what Moray is refering to as 'cable drive syndrom' ?

cheers ---john---

Not sure whether this is of any interest to you, but there is a very good company that will make any cable up for you.All you have to do is sent them a pattern, and they'll do the rest.

Speedy cables
Unit 14,
Merchant Drive,
Hertford,
SG13 7AZ
01992 581600

They must have made mine as soon as they recieved it, around 3 days and I had it back.
Thay can sometimes be cheaper the OE cables.

Dremel.

John S, if your speedo cable snaps your ECU cannot get a reading from the speedo gauge and automatically cuts your fuel at 4500rpm (iirc) if you do a reset it will not give you CEL until you reach 4500rpm again.
As your car has no speedo reading it will cut in every gear as it becomes a rev dependant fuel cut..
Think that makes sense..

Been on the sauce

Cool

Do you mean the ecu speedo feed?

If so, then on cable driven speedo cars (up to ~96 iirc) the feed comes from the back of the speedo, and the signal can suffer from cable drive syndrome. This shouldnt be such an issue on the later electronic speedo cars. The later cars have a speed sensor plugged directly into the gearbox.

You could just have a look under the bonnet for the speedo cable, you can see it run from turbo side of the gearbox up to the bulkhead grommet. If you have had a cable driven speedo car delimited and MPH converted, there will be an inline gearbox in the cable somewhere along the way.
