Or something in between.

This has been bugging me since I had the car.

The car is a MY00 WRX Type RA WRC Limited and when it was new it had the following :

Reasons why I think its a WRX :

No STI on the intercooler
No red STI manifold
WRX 7,500 rpm redline on clocks
No roof vent
No DCCD
No STi badges and black grill badge (pink now)
Double peashooter exhaust (ex)

Reasons why I think its a a sort of STi

Gold wheels with STis centre caps
8250 STI rev limiter
STi6 VF29 turbo (didnt all WRX have TD turbos?) runs about 1.3bar
STi suspension
STI resonator centre section
STi pedal extensions
Group N ratios

Also has the usual stuff climate, electrics, central locking etc.

So have I just got a hybrid or what ?

They did do a WRX Type RA and a WRX STi RA for your year the BHP was the same but the WRX type RA had 249lb/ft torque and the WRX STi RA had 260lb/ft torque.
Also the WRX Type RA was slightly lighter at 1,210kg against 1,270kg for the WRX STi RA.
If you havnt got any STi stickers then Id say youve got a WRX Type RA.
Power to weight of the WRX Type RA was 231ps per tonne against 220ps per tonne for the WRX STi RA.
You dont realise just how many variations on the same car there are untill you start looking

Actually< Yes and No.

YA SEE, when I got my car, it was advertised as a STI 5 Type R LTD. Now as I'm led to believe LTD should have a plaque indicating their No. of issue. Mine hasn't.
However as I said its Sonic blue with roof vent. Also the longer 5th gear ratio associated with the LTD.

This is the interesting bit.6 point F/F. rollcage, with (At the time) Full Colin Mcrae Rally Decals. Most of which I had removed.(Sigh) because that dayglo yellow fades in the sun.

BTW It also has STI mudfaps (yellow?)

Question is.Is this an even rare Special Edition?

Thoughts anyone?

Chris, all WRX's from MY96 (phase 1.5) on had VF series turbos

Only the export market cars had TD04 series turbos.

Your car IIRC is a WRX with a few Sti add ons, like the Sti 1 was. The engine is stock WRX, but the transmission (if it has an adjustable centre diff, if it doesn't then it's RA ratios only) is STi, the suspension is Sti and so are the wheels.

They're essentially a parts bin special.

Question

SG72 I believe a few people on here have Sonic STi V5 Ltd's with roof vents, longer 5th gear etc etc but no plaque, mine is one of these, imported new from Japan by Roger Clarke motorsport, the plot thickens.............

I've heard that due to the number of potential customers requesting the 22b. A lot were disappointed they couldn't obtain one and that SUBARU offered buyers cheaper STI upgrades on standard models.

To try to appease them.

Anyone else heard this?

If it is not a STI then shouldn't it have the rev limiter set at 7500 and not 8250 rpm?

The best why to check is the engine codes, I believe the non STI type RA is EJ207 DW1KE and the STI RA is EJ207 DW1PJ.

The plaque should be on the nearside suspension top mount under the bonnet!

I have a fax from Japan comfirming mine is an STI, done by the previous owner. The number he faxed to is 0081 422 337840 which is the technical department at Subaru.....worth a go!!!!

DOM
I dont know if we're at cross purposes here ( Serves me right for butting into CHrisPs thread)
I know mine is an STI5 Type R with all the parts and more of the LTD. Just no LTD plaque (It should be below the ashtray)

Thanks Dom I will have a look on the VIN plate. I know when I checked the VIN plate originally the model code was GC8G47D pointing to an MY00 WRX RA ie non sti. Its just it seems to have the higher rev limiter.

My redline is 7,500 and rev limiter is 8250 (never hit this myself I was told by another owner with exactly the same limited edition series car). IIRC the STI redline for the MY00 is 8K ? So I wrongly assummed my rev limiter would be about 7750 or there abouts. Suppose the thing to do is take the lid off the ecu box and see whats in there . If it has a 6502 or Z80 chip I can reprogram it myself .

The rev limiter was teh trigger for this thread really as I was wondering what the difference would be as it has the displacement and turbo. I assume the same MY STi has stronger pistons, injectors, fuel pump and bigger intercooler allowing it to run a slightly more aggressive ecu map maybe ?.

Andy,

That code relates to a WRX type RA, the STI WRX type RA code is EJ20G DW4PJ!

One of the best ways to tell if it is a STI is to look at the rear suspension arms..if these are allumimium then it's almost certainly a STI!!!

Cheers
Dom.
