MAF Sensor Gone Again!
#1
My MAF sensor has gone again and this is the fourth one i've had and the new one will be the 5th in 3 years of owning the car.
Car is an STI5 Type R and although the car and part has warranty i am fed up of this constantly happening.
Before anyone asks i am even running factory airbox and filter.
Could there be something else causing this as i only had it changed 3 weeks ago.
Mel.

Did you have it replaced with the new sensor?
The new sensor (rather than whole MAF assembly, you can just buy the element) has 4 pin outs instead of 5, but does the same job and AFAIK there are no reported failures of these new type yet.....

ScoobyJawa, has always been replaced with a new complete sensor and houising everytime by dealer as it has always failed in less then a year of the previous one so it has been under warranty.
So its not the fact that i have to keep forking out for a new one (other than the first one) but the fact that this is starting to p155 me off abit on why its always failing.
Pban, Spoke with Dealer and it is booked in for next week they want to investigat e abit further to why it has happened so often.
I have done no special mods to the car other than De-cat, clutch and brakes, other than these car is always run on Optimax and OB.
Maybe i should just bite the bullet and get a Link ECU (£1400 i cant afford at the mo).

Don't do that - it you are getting the whole housing from Subaru each time you are likely to be replacing it with the crap flawed sensor each time Also, its about 300 quid and the sensor itself is only around 70-100 quid. The sensor can be got through Subaru (Power Engineering also sell it), you simply take the old one out of the housing and put the new one in.
It is possible that it keeps failing even on standard setup just because it is a crap sensor (I've heard of a few other cars with the same prob), buy the new 4 pin one and your probs should hopefully be gone If you take the plug off your existing MAF sensor and look out how many pinouts there are on it I bet its 5!!!!
Part number you need is: 22794AA010 METER CP-AIR FLOW

ScoobyJawa, Sorry mate i didn't make myself clear i haven't had to pay for any of the sensor apart from the first, the part itself has a years warranty from subaru so they have always replaced it under warranty.
As for this 4 pin sensor is it a new part that subaru have made or is it the old type maf which came on the pre 98 cars?
I will check tonight how many pins is on my sensor plug.

You did make yourself clear - I'm just rambling (for the benefit of anyone else I guess!!!) Get them to fit the new sensor - and get a refund for the rest
The 4 pin sensor is made for Subaru under licence from Bosch, its not from the earlier cars, specifically for MY99 on. Although its made by Bosch its a Genuine Subaru part, hence available from dealers and comes in a box with Subaru stickers on it etc.....
I had mine replaced at PE and speaking to Merv he said that none of these Bosch ones had come back failed.......

I'm fairly confident you'll find that fixes it (providing your current one is actually a 5 pin jobbie!) Don't let the dealer fob you off though They sometimes deny this part is available, but it is

Running my V5 Type R 12months with a blitz SUS filter with no probs then blew the MAF 4 weeks ago, so got a Blitz LM filter last week and lo and behold blew my MAF this morning driving to work. Only doing 5000rpm and changing up at the time.
2 bloody MAF's in 4 weeks, cost £300 to get it fixed the first time 'cos I did not have a clue what was wrong and had to get it towed, now I've just forked out £75 for the new one and £45 for a Ramair panel filter(original airbox put straight back in!)
Both MAF's were obtained through a main dealer and are 4 pins.
Bloody sick!
Edited to say I've just fitted in the pouring rain so now I feel bloody sick and very wet, must kill.....

Blitz kill MAF's easily, their filtration is the worst of all the filters.
HKS is also a MAF killer.
K&N is one of the most reliable and Apexi one of the best filterer.

OK, this may sound stupid, but don't car parts carry there own individual warranty?
If I bought a car battery, it'd come with a 3 or 5yr gaurantee. So, if I buy a replacement MAF or O2 sensor and it fails, then why isn't the part guaranteed (or is it)?
Fair enough, if you're running a aftermarket air-filter, but if I had a standard car I would expect individual parts to have a warranty.
Is this the case?

Running a MAF with the Blitz kit & then expecting the warranty to replace the MAF is a bit like complaining that some toughened glass broke when you repeatedly threw bricks at it. The delicate film/wire sensors are just ripped to shreds by the dirt coming through the filter - the MAF isn't failing, it's being destroyed!

Richiewong, your MAF will probably fail again with a Ramair. It is not recommended for MY99/00 version 5/6 UK or imports by Subaru, Prodrive or any tuner in the UK to my knowledge because it is well known to damage these MAF sensors. Fit the standard panel filter, K&N panel or ITG and you should have a much better chance of it not failing again.

If you are considering a remap, you could do a lot worse than a well mapped unichip.
From a Happy Unichip customer of 4 years.................
£550 including EBC if you need one

I bought a new MAF for my STi5 when I first got the car it had a problem.
The MAF arrived through the post, fitted it, lasted 2 days and went again. I sent it back and requested it was protected with bubble-wrap during transit.
Been on 6 months now without further problems, they are sensitive to vibration so I think that's what bu99ered it 1st time.

ScoobyJawa, checked over the weekend and the MAF sensor is a 4 pin jobbie. So that throw that idea out the window.
Ozzy, Maf sensor is being replaced under warranty of the part as it has been for the last 4 times aswell.
Abbylad, sorry mate i tried that before but they needed it to send back to claim for the new one.
Gez, Turn to the darkside NEVER!
OH by the way Alex's new car is sick.
