To mod or to upgrade?
#1
Hi,
Currently got a std UK MY98, but I wouldn't mind a more powerful car...
2 choices, I figure
1) Mod my car - lots of money getting it to ~ 276bhp
2) Buy a P1. - similar money, better (reliable?) balance of mods, similar power.
Assuming I find a P1, what sort of performance mods can be done, and at what sort of price? (I know the brakes should be looked at first)
Basically, what is the practical tuning limit for a std uk car vs a P1?

Ok,
a P1 on average is around 17-18k, your car is worth around 8-9k, so when you mod the P1 to say a safe 320bhp you could have had a total engine rebuild, bigger turbo, ecu, brakes etc on your my98 and have a more powerful car
take your pick

Hmmm. Good answer...
I was rather hoping that you'd say "save up for a P1" which would keep me out of debt a while!
But yes, I suppose the 'spare' £10K is a lot of mods indeed... Oh dear.

Another good point! And another question:
Initial purchase price aside, is a P1 more tunable than a std UK car, or is it literally a std UK car with a certain set of mods?

It's closer to a standard JDM car, with the requirements of one of them (ie should have higher octane fuel, etc.)
I think your question can only be answered by knowing how much more power you want!
You could get to the standard P1 power, a similar suspension setup & brakes for a lot less than the cost of changing to a P1. But there's other points to getting a P1...
If you just want more power (& the other bits needed for that power hike), I'd say no. But a P1 one would be nice...
(as an 'aside', personally the first thing I'd do with a P1 is remap the thing - I'm not at all convinced about the mapping of the P1s standard ECU - and so there's an immediate cost that could go on your current car anyway...)
