Im rebuilding my engine at the moment and need to know if there is supposed to be alittle side to side movement on the conrod. If I grab it with my hand I can move it side to side a couple of mill (mm) Is there suppost to be movement???

Any advice???

That's too much. Side clearance on a rod should be 0.1 - 0.3mm.

there should be play, but a couple of mm sounds like a hell of a lot. I think .010" is about ok, which sounds about wot hypo says

2 mm is about 80 thou" which is pretty enormous, unless it is normal to have such a big clearance between the crank shoulders and the con rod. Might be worth checking either the rods or the crank for excessive wear. 10 thou" would be a reasonable figure.

Please except my apologise, I exadurated slightly. When I grab the end of the conrod you can move it sidways about 1-2mm. Dont know weather that is just the rod slidding along the pin at the back. But no play in and out. I think its ok. I have stripped it down today to the bare minimum and I will see if there ok.

Im going to get the conrods shot peened and stress relieved and the crank, conrods, and pistons balanced. Anyone know if this is a good thing. What will the difference be?

Thanks for all the good replys and help

Thats sounds a lot better. I was talking about the sideways play between the big end of the con rod and the crankshaft, should be some play but not excessive.

The shot peening will add to the strength of the rods and accurate balancing must be good.

Good luck with it all.

To be a little bit more accurate, it should be between 0.07mm and 0.33mm, with a limit of 0.4mm.
