Induction Kit - or not?
#1
Hi all. New to this so have patience!
Have recently acquired my first and very lovely '97 STI V3. Am considering induction kit but which one? There are so many views. Am leaning towards HKS.
Have just fitted de-cat centre section and am pleased with result, not banzai but noticeable, seems to be smoother and definitely more pokey.
Will HKS be worth the money and what other things will I have to get done to allow it to give max benefit??
Would appreciate any advice especially from people with similar cars and what diff you found.

I read a review on induction kits some time ago.
They tested 4 induction kits by hooking them up to vacume cleaners and sucking carbon through them.
The one that let the least through it was an Apexi induction kit.
Blitz was the worst i think.
Cant remember where i saw this, but im sure someone will put the link up.

They are difficult to locate if i remember correctly.
Around 2 years ago, i found a couple of places that sold them. But unfortunately, i dont have the details anymore. I'm pretty sure they were about £200.
If i find the dealer details again i will let you know
Cheers
Chris

Can reccommend the Pipercross Ind Kit - Had on on my MY99 for 45K mile without any problems.
With the decat centre section and Mongoose backbox iit impproved the MPG a bit - Yes really
Pulled like a train instead of running out of 'puff' at 5K rpm in 3rd gear or higher.
Pipercross should be around £ 80.00
Make sure to fit it carfully and securely as although not prved for sure, vibration was a possible cause of MAF failure although more a problem for MY99/00 cars.
Plus i liked the sound!

Sorry to push in on your thread but i've just bought a second hand HKS and wasn't sure how to mount it. It came without any kind of fixing kit. Has anyone got any pic's please. Thanks.

I don't know sounds to me like could be a case of pot luck or 'suck it and see' (Sorry about that!!)
Gary cheers was close enough, I'll have a shot of that stuff!
Chris, may know a place in Croydon, Exoticar we'll see.
John, just a couple of questions about your reply if I may;
Have a boost guage as part of a triple set down by CD player, really easy(not)to see but have got used to it now.
Am I to assume that an STI or any model does not come with a factory knock sensor and a knocklink is an aftermarket sensor linked!! to a light or something on dash??
So if this thing started to light up on my dash what do I do release go pedal from carpet??
Someone told me to be careful modding an STI as have to be careful with boost and stuff regarding the low octane rating over here relative to Japan.
Having said that, think mine came over in 2000 and I am second owner so can't be all bad.
Is that why you suggested the link?
Cheers.

All Imprezas have a knock sensor, but they have limited control and will let the car det if the octane of fuel is too low.
The Knocklink is a box with a separate sensor - see my website for details, links, information on detonation (scroll past all the stuff trying to sell you stuff for the model you don't have and have a good read of the technical stuff).
If you use good octane fuel and octane booster, plus check the knocklink is not going active after a modification you will do a lot better than blindly fitting x mod because y said it was good.
I suggest take your time, don't do anything now, read up on it fully and then consider. Meantime use Optimax and octane booster.
