Question

when i put my foot down in second there seems to be a flat spot (not lag before anyone says anything) where there is no power then i change to third and it pulls like a trooper!?! it happens when i put my foot down at 3000 revs. is it because the turbo doesn't get chance to spin up properly??

Sounds like the emissions thingy buit into the ECU.
If you set off and change into second and take it to 3k and hold it for a second and then boot it, your car will take off as usual.
On the other hand, if you did the same but hold it for longer at 3k (say 4 seconds), you will only hit half boost. Hold your foot to the floor till you hit around 5k and full boost will return.
Try it

I could be wrong, but it sounds like what i described.
I asked the same question many months back.

I've done a quick search and apparently it's not emmisions, it's sommat to do with drive past noise regulations that some countries have.

I used to get this running a VTA, so I took it off.

Yeah, sounds like the ECU doing its thing.

If you have a boost gauge you can plainly see it runs half boost.

Seeing I'm in nice mood I'll cut and paste the bit out the SIDC FAQ rather than linking it

There is also an apparent protection system built in to the ECU to prevent damage to the gearbox under hard acceleration in 2nd gear. When travelling at a constant speed for a period of time between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm(more than 5 seconds), pressing the accelerator can result in less than full boost being delivered until 5,000+ rpm is reached. This phenomenon has been observed in a variety of cars, in different countries, but only by a small handful of drivers. Without replacing the ECU with an aftermarket one, the only real alternative is to make a change in your driving style. Simply drive along in 3rd gear, and change down to 2nd when needed, or simply change up to third and let the mid range torque do all the work.

I get the same thing on my MY99. It's a EU noise emission test that scoobies would fail if the half boost software was not written into the ECU. I'm not sure if prodrive or other ECU's may have this written out.

I must admit it does pi$$ me off when I've been 3 parts of the way round a roundabout and then boot it and ........ yawn.

Lately I've been taking roundabouts in third......

I've had this problem before in my MY00, most noticeable up hills!!

Particular place i can think of is heading out of blakedown towards kidderminster (locals will know where i mean), its 30 into a 60 up a hill, so second just before 60 sign hold it in second then try to fly off, you feel turbo come in a bit but not at all like it should. Change to third and off we go!!

Exclamation

that is the reason i fitted a dawes set at 1bar.
before i used to get 0.8 in first,0.5 in second(sometimes)or 0.9,correct boost in 3rd 0.95,and overboost in 4th and 5th up to 1.25bar for a sec or two that setlled back to 0.95bar.
with the dawes i get 1 bar rock solid in all gears and no overboost.the oem boost control is junk!
