I've run 1.6 bar in 1st gear without issue. The only issue I've had is third. That doesn't mean you won't have an issue, but the 6MT is supposed to be strong, I suspect 1.3 would hardly tickle it, but who knows?

Can't remember which, but either the JDM or the STi has a gear judge boost control. Along with a 3 port this could be explosive

AVC-R is a great alternative. Note that the ECU wouldn't be able to drop boost in response to uncontrollable knock, but if you have a knocklink that shouldn't be an issue.

The other issue is heatsoak in 1st gear, but that depends whether you fit that FMIC

Yes the EBC will work fine.

Sorry just checked, seems to be only the UK STi ECUs which have gear compensation (but they have it disabled as standard).

Question

Not quite making the boost in the lower gears that I would like,ie make 1.3ish and would like the full 1.45 bar target.I presume this due to a lack of adequate load? Could this be resolved with a suitable EBC? Could an EBC work with Ecutek? What might the downsides be?

I think the general consensus is that if you have lots of boost in the first 2 gears your probably going to need a gearbox rebuild very quickly afterwards
The lower ratio's of the first 2 gears should make up for lack of boost but i think you would need quite a bit of work if you wanted 1.2bar or there abouts in these gears (and an account with your local tyre place )

Hi John. Are you saying that the JDM STi may have this gear boost control thingy? What exactly is it? So apart from the knock issue a EBC could work with an Ecutek?

EBC will work as long as the car is remapped to suit it. (says he stating the obvious)

My STi5 box is still just holding up although now I can get 2 bar in second I don't know for how much longer !!! certainly 1st to 2nd syncro and 3rd to 4th syncro has suffered but no whines or odd noises yet.
