I have a MY96 UK Wagon, Is piston slap a problem on this model? When I start from cold and very gently press the throttle a knocking sound can be heard but dissappears as the revs increase and once warm??????

check out this sound file. symptoms does sound like piston slap but don't know if it affected ur model.
