Here's the scenario......had the car serviced (96 Turbo wagon) on Monday by Subaru dealer. They said the car was mint, I was chuffed.

Saturday, after buying a new HKS panel filter, decided to RACE home
to fit new filter at the same time I blew away some geezer in Cav sri, car was going like a dream!

Get home, fit panel filter and notice that the hose nozzle coming off the top of header tank has corroded and hence snapped off, luckily I noticed a leak and didn't drive anymore. This weekend I've made some very very temporary repairs to nozzle until I can order new tank. Tonight I decided to drive a few miles very cautiously to "test" my repair before I attempt to drive to work.

Smoke or steam pissing out from under bonnet with a strange acidic smell, pull over ( only done 2/3 miles) steam is coming from the area of the intercooler (although I'm not exactly sure which is the intercooler, I thought it was the large radiator at rear of engine). Let the car cool down, drive home to more steam.

Call the AA, they check the car out, nothing doing! I suggest a quick spin round the block, get back, you got it......steaming again.....ANY IDEAS????

One thing, the turbo was unusually quiet after the service from Subaru, only a slight whistle. How can I tell if the turbo has blown, are there any tell-tale signs either visually or audible?

If anyone can offer some advice on this subject I know they're on this forum.

Desperate and stumped.

Skoosh.

96 Turbo wagon still under warranty.

If the pipe was the turbo water feed and the temporary repair has restricted the water flow to the turbo you will get superheated steam, suggest replacing the tank and repiping correctly before driving any more.

Bob, I think you are right, the nozzle and pipe affected do go to the turbo and since the service last monday, the turbo has been less evident from a noise point of view.

The temp repair has decreased the overall interior pipe circumference so there must be less water going to the turbo, so I think that you are correct and you are a gent.

Won't drive the car until new tank is fitted ( by myself !! ) I need it to get to Silverstone on Friday for my Ferrari 355 track day!!

You see fellow scoobs......I knew somebody could help.

Cheers Bob, if you're ever in Stoke I'll buy you a pint !

Skoosh ( perhaps a little less worried now).

my header tank had the same fault, replacement was £35, its sounds like your bodge might have done more harm than good, check the plastic sides to the radiator (front) and see if they have split (common failing), if not search for a loose hose.
