CAI with Ram air
#1
MY02, CAI with Ram air intake. Turbo spools up much faster and bost holds higher. Air filter and MAF sensor are both stock. Because the ram air pressure is proportional to forward speed and not engine speed, is the ECU capable of adjusting the air/fuel mixture to maintain it at mapped levels? Is there a risk that the engine may run lean during acceleration as forward speed increases?
Thanks..
Thanks..

Yes. No.
Won't run lean from this effect anyway. It may run lean from changes in flow pattern across the MAF, which would also advance the timing and risk detonation. Some cars have blown up within 10 miles because of a CAI that does this. I have found cars 20% leaner than they should be because of CAIs. This may be why your car is sprightlier - they often are just before they blow up.
However I am trying to visualise your actual setup if you have kept the standard panel filter - in its box or not? You would probably do fine if everything was standard from the panel filter onwards, but I've not see the setup you mention.
Of note, Dave Walker (author Engine Management) claims he has never observed a true ram air effect below 160 mph despite the claims. Is he right?

Thank you John. You are right, everything from panel filter box onwards is stock. My CAI is a 4" tube attached from the foglamp slot to the filter box. Simple but effective.. and now it doesn't keep me awake at night! Cheers..
