Hi i have just bought a MY97 and i am enjoying my scooby experience except for 1 small problem.

When changing gear quickly from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th there is a slight gear crunch. If i take my time changing gear though it seems to go in fine.

Has any one had this problem before and what is it likely to be.

Any help much appreciated.

I believe that if you have the standard dump valve(recirculating) type, the rpm don't drop instantly when you take your foot off to change up. I have noticed this when driving a friend's MY98 Scooby.

I have a VTA dump valve and my engine rpm drops more quickly so I can make a faster up change and more smoothly too without having to wait as you say.

Very common problem with Subaru gear boxes, only change nicely slowly.

I have been reading up on past posts and people recommend changing the gearbox oil to castrol syntrax.

Has anyone else had any success with this?

I don't think many car's engines drop quickly enough to rev-match when doing a really quick up change. That's why the boxes have synchromesh, but you can still "beat the box" depending on how good the synchro is meaning it either crunches or baulks (meaning it just doesn't go in causing you to miss the gear).

Later boxes are said to be better than earlier ones but I dunno when the changeover was.
