Having a week ago been given the boot, I was wondering whether it would help cut costs if I did certain parts of the major annual service myself.
I've managed to replace spark plugs, oil and oil filters (and drain, replace and bleed hydraulic system on a citroen many yrs ago) on previous cars, but given the other items on the servicing schedule, would I be saving much in doing these few minor items myself ?

If you're not too worried about a nicely stamped service book (& losing value when selling it), Scoobs aren't that hard to DIY service entirely.
Someone can point you at a web link to the pre 97 service manual on the web...
My car's been DIY serviced (at a considerable cost saving ) for the past year - it works as long as you've got the time to do it. Over the lifetime I intend to keep it, the losses in residuals should be more than offset by the money I've not paid out in servicing...

I do all my own servicing and I have to say the Impreza is one of the easiest cars to work on in this area.
It saves a small fortune on labour, i also get parts at trade cost 'cos I'm friendly (not too friendly you understand) with the parts team and the biggest benefit is you know it's been done right (or wrong!!) and all the lubricant and coolant levels are correct grade and levels.
As for stamping the book I keep a detailed log of mileage, service sheets and invoices/receipts to back it all up. Never had any problems in loosing value this way as long as it's documented some people are actually impressed when you come to sell it on!!!
