Wrecked Turbo, WHY?
#1
As if a big end wasn`t bad enough, then you find a knackered turbo when you pull the thing apart!!
As you look at the rotar vanes thruogh the turbo exit bore (inlet side) all the vanes look like holly leaves, bent with bits/chunks missing out of them.
The turbo is a VF24 of an STI, and I have sourced a spanker to go back on, BUT why did it happen, AND/OR will it happen again??
I have a large cone foam filter but that is intact and the induction system has no obvious splits/holes.
I have only had the car a few months, so I am guessing this was already done, as car has never appeared that quick, ands I cant find the bits anywhere.
Someone please offer advise as I don`t want to wreck my very precious new turbo!!

You may find that the big end failure may be down to bad oil pressure..
This in turn may cause extra wear on the turbo bearings which would lead to the compressor wheel touching the cover..
Just a guess without looking, is there any play in the shaft??

Whose to say what crap went into the inlet though the split in the induction hose? When the turbo is spinning at 100,000rpm little bits of grit and so on will wreck the impellor.
Just read that there is no split in the induction, which is not what you said to me originally, but that pipe is quite nasty.

Aaaaaah, okay I get you now.
But either way it sounds like it was done over time prior to you getting the car, possibly while someone didn't have a filter in place?
Just a quick check, you do still have a mesh at both ends of the MAF sensor don't you? Otherwise I would be wondering where any missing bits are...

I think you are right it has been done a while so what someone has done before me is anyones guess!?
I shall have a look tonight to ensure these mesh grills are in place?
Thanks

If it´s a MY99 or MY00 car, the MAF doesn´t have wire screens!
The compressor wheel from a VF24 is VERY fragile. Are you running an aftermarket BOV and running high boost? Then surge could occur at part throttle, that could explain the damage.
Mark.
