mate's car engine smells of "boiling water" yet coolant level ok - what could it be?

Hi,
Question at work today - workmate has a car which sort of smells of the radiator "boiling" - ie, like metalicy hot water sort of smell - yet coolant level seems ok.
ie, the sort of smell you'd imagine if there was no coolant and the radiator was running dry?
Smells like this after a long hard drive...
Is this a bad sign? Is it just radiator "musk"?? :-)

I'm not sure if this will help, but its worth a try. A mate at Fords said add a tiny bit of bleach in the header tank...this apparently gets rid of that peppery smell. Worth a go I s'poe?

He doesn't smell it inside the car, so probably not in the heater matrix. It is just a general smell when outside the car after a spirited drive. Almost like a smell eminating from the radiator system somewhere.......
Sounds like nothing too serious to worry about.
Do you think bleach is worth a try? He wasn't sure!
